Unlocking the doors

2008 Limited V8, The manuel states to visit the dealer if you want to turn off having to hit the key fob 2 times to unlock all the doors. Getting tired of having just the D/S door opening first then having to hit the button again for all the rest. Anyone do this themselves so I dont waist a trip to the stealership?

id like this too if anyone knows how? i know on other cars you can program it off of the head unit but not in the 4runners

If you just hit the button twice the first time it unlocks all the doors.

Yes I realize that, thats why I posted the question on how to get to unlock with one push instead of twice without taking it to the dealer. On my last vehicle you were able to do it right on the key fob. On the toyota the manual says to "visit the dealer."

The dealer can connect the truck to a computer which can then reprogram it.
As far as I know, there is no reasonable cost alternative for the DIY'er.

Is this option only available on 2008+? I've been to two Toyota dealers with my 2007 and they both fed me the same line: "That is a safety feature and as such Toyota does not provide us with a way to over-ride it."

Seemed like a bunch of BS to me, they're lawyers probably told them not to do it because of liability fears. I would REALLY like to find a way to unlock all the doors with a single push as I never open the drivers door first.

You are correct. It is BS. I had this back in '04. A dealer has to do it with their scan tool. You have 2 options:

1) Take it to a dealer with a service department that knows what "custom set body functions" means. They can use the tool to set several other functions as well or...

2) Take it back to the guys that refused in the first place. Ask them if they know how to use a scan tool because it puts into question their ability to work on the vehicle. They are incompetent and they obviously don't want your future service business.

There is a list somewhere of all the items that can be set so you may want to find it and do them all at once. Either way, be prepared to pay a minimum flat shop rate or talk to them real nice and they can do this 1 minute job for free. Lexus does it for their customers as a one time freebie in the first year.
 
Try this procedure out. I have yet to do it to my 4Runner.

No offense to the OP or anyone else, but isn't funny how incredibly lazy we've become? I mean, seriously... having to push the unlock button twice to unlock all the doors? Is that really an inconvenience? Is anyone old enough to remember when we didn't have remotes and actually had to lock & unlock our car doors with a key?

I suppose as time passes, people will start to complain about having to insert the ignition key and turn it to start the engine too. There are already a bunch of cars out there that have pushbutton starting, right? Why should we have to actually put our key in the ignition and turn it? LOL...

But anyway, I prefer the way my 4Runner is set up now anyway... one push unlocks the driver's door and two pushes unlocks all the other doors. Most of the time I'm driving by myself, so there's no need to unlock the other doors. It also saves wear and tear on all the other lock mechanisms, since they are not needlessly activated every time I get into my 4Runner.
 
Well I think above poster is just grumpy. I am with the OP, I dont like to hit the button twice sometimes and it still wasnt fast enough to get all the doors unlocked so you have to hit the button twice again and in the end the truck ends up beeping a million times. Plus its great when you think you unlocked all the doors and your wife gets to her door just to find a locked door lol. I wish this was reprogrammable by the user like my Acura TL was.
 

I pretty much just walk up and push my unlock button multiple times. It's become habit. Most people would say, as the above poster, it starts beeping like crazy but take 20 minutes out of your day and disable the beep: Toyota120

One of my favorite mod's so far!

Thank you, I wasnt going to say anything but what does hitting a button 2 times and being annoyed by it qualify as "lazy." I agree 100% about the wife and beeping thing too funny watching her roll her eyes as she standing there pulling on the door handle.
 
I would hate to lose the beep on 'lock'. The danged door lock solenoids get tired.

Fortunately if the solenoid/motor fails to lock the door then you do NOT get the beep confirm.

My 4Runner is in the shop to day for it's 4th door solenoid replacement.
Thank you extended warranty. They are around $400 (each, including labor)

Grumpy? Not at all. If anything, I'm amused. I mean, how much effort is it to press a button twice? Kinda reminds me of the old Jetsons episode where Jane gets buttonitis because she has to press a button to make dinner every night.
