Unsmooth Shifting - 04 T4R 4sp

Without reading all 137 of the complaints with the 4th Gen T4R, I figured I'd start up a thread that's probably included in there.

Okay, what is with the crappy 4sp transmissions on these 4Runners?! My dad bought the 05 Tacoma with the 5sp tranny and it shifts smooth and strong...what I'd expect from a higher priced vehicle. Mine shifts fairly hard from first to second, but only slightly rough in the other upshifts. I replaced the fluid (which I DO NOT recommend without a whole day on your hands...and brake cleaner) hoping it would fix this issue ESPECIALLY after removing some decent-ish sized metal fragments from the filter screen. Nope, not a bit. Shoot, it might even be worse.

I wish I was not out of warranty so I could make a stink with Toyota, but maybe you guys/gals can help. Any suggestions or advice or even simliar issues?

Note: the fluid I drained was beautiful after 40-ish thousand miles, so I can't assume it's a bad transmission.

Odd. I too have an '04 4Runner V6 with the 4 speed. It shifts very smoothly and I tow so sorry but I cant tell why it would not shift smooth. EDIT: My bad, cars don't take a crap.

haha, you left off an "F" there. I'm getting some fluids changed on Thursday, so I'll mention it to Toyota and see what they say. Thanks for the input.

You have a 5 year 60000 mile drivetrain warranty. That would include the Tranny. You list 54000 miles in your signature???? My 04 shifts just fine and I have 64000 on mine and I have never changed the Fluid.

Well that's news to me! I'm gonna have to give a visit to the service department then. I'll update this thread...when I get an update.
