Having such things eliminated is simply a fact of life when living in a lawsuit-happy society. Its a liability issue for Toyota. If they left it in there at some point someone would have an accident while using it on the road, then see an opportunity to get something for nothing. It would basically go like this:
- Toyota is responsible for my accident because they should have disabled the ability to program the navigation system while driving. Therefore, I would like 5 million dollars for my troubles.
Sure, anyone could say an intelligent person would know not to do that...or at least know that if they do they are responsible for maintaining enough attention to the road to avoid an accident. But its amazing how dumb some people are...or, more importantly, how "dumb" they will ACT if they see potential dollar signs.
Case in point: Cingular wireless was just sued because someone had an accident while talking on his cell phone and not paying attention to the road. The driver in question sued Cingular saying that the accident was Cingular's fault because they sold him the phone and did not have a large imprinted message on the phone telling him not to use it while driving.
