Update to my rear shock adventure

Hey there,

So I was debating what shocks for the rear and decided to go with Rancho RS5000. Advance has a nice sale going so I went ahead with these.

So far i'm not impressed, it seems my truck still bottoms out in the rear over dips in the road, also still shakes and sways over bumps.

Now I know my rears were shot, from doing the bounce test, rear bounces alot more then once or twice after you stop shaking it.

But now it seems I needed all new suspension not just shocks, my springs must be weak, far as I know the previous owner had them replaced in 2002 on recall from toyota and never again.......

So what springs besides stock, will the rs5000 shocks work with? the most I want is 1-2" lift tops, I'm thinking 99 tall springs?

I run OME 906, they gave me 2 inches of lift, I run stock toyota rear shocks and it rides smooth as silk

Coils that old are probably worn out, yes. But I think part of your problem is the shocks, AFAIK those ranchos are valved really soft. I would look into Tokicos or bilstien if you can afford different shocks.

If you go 99 coils I would go new. FYI they are the same spring rate as all factory coils.

Old man emu 906 are heavier and handle loads better.

So I should get away with OME 906's in the rear with my Ranchos, but what to put in the front thats cheap? I just need it to sit level, or slightly higher in the rear.

Yea I've read and re-read the lift thread but its all jumbled and confusing imo.....
906 rear springs + what cheap front = level body? it's like algebra lol

I run the toyota tundra trd coils in front, I found them cheap at a junkyard for $90 for the pair. I sit a level 2 inches all the way around.

Thats sounds good, but I'll never find Tundra parts at a salavage yard within a 100 miles of here, I'll have to get them new lol

What about shocks? do they need to be longer then stock? or will stock type work like my rear stock type ranchos?

I would go with the tundra bilstein 5100 adjustables, that way if you decide to go bigger in the back down the road you can change the front height to match.

Tundra shocks are valved firmer and will ride harsher than a 4runner shock.

I second this quote. Tundra 5100's are perfectly valve matched for Tundra TRD coils. It is not stiff and jarring by any means. It's night and day smooher than the 2000 factory front coil/shocks even when they were new. My factory A-Spec suspension Acura TL rides much firmer than the progressive Tundra TRD/5100 setup. With the front biased weight distribution, my 890/bilstein hd rear setup feels slightly firmer than the front. They compliment each other well on rough roads and highways alike.

I have had Rancho RS5000's for 2 years, and i love them i ran them with stock coils for till this july and i would never bottom out over bumps, and i now run the same RS5000's with OME 906's and the back end is way firmer and the shocks are still great with 30k miles on them, i would change your coils because the RS5000's are a great shock.

I have 98 limited Struts in the front and mine sits pretty nice, little to no rake with the 906's:

I'm also running RS5000's on 99 coils, which need to be replaced with 906's as they are shot. Very nice ride over smoother bumps, but if I hit anything fast I get the jarring effect. I also seem to have a little rear sag with ~300 lbs. loaded up. I've been thinking about going a little higher tho, I really want to be able to run 35"-37" while wheeling.

You could go with the OME 880 fronts. They should firm things up and not give you too much lift but should be higher than the 99 coils. Wheeler's has those and the Rough Country 9000 for a good price. He will even build them for you if you can't do it yourself. That way you could just drop the old ones and bolt them right up. The 880/906 Rough Country combo is what I am going with. I don't want too much lift but need to be able to tow from time to time.
