Upgraded alarm system - how to turn it off

Hi veryone -

I've gt an '05 4Runner with the upgraded alarm system. I'm wondering if anyone here can tell me how to turn the system off. I'm not talking about how to turn it off when it's blaring, I'm talking about how to turn the system off completely... as in not armed, even when I click the lock button.

I was under the impression that all you had to do for that is to push the button on the dash so that it is in the 'out' position. I do that, but nothing happens. It works the same whether the button is 'in' or 'out'.

Can anyone help here?

im wondering the same thing as you... not that i want to turn off the alarm, but what the button does... it seems the same whether it is pushed in or pushed out. Whats the difference?

Me three. No idea what that button does. When we first got ours the red light was on--haven't seen it on since. Doesn't seem to do anything.

I had the service guys take a look at it while my car was in the shop for the exhaust TSB... they say that it can't be turned off, shich I still don't believe, but I can't figure it out, so I guess it's true. The only thing the button does is allow you to change the horn settings (you can turn off the honks when you lock/unlock) and put it into valet mode. I'm still not really happy with the system (several reasons... i don't want the car to lock itself after 30 seconds if I've hit unlock and not opened a door... I don't want it to honk when there is a door open and I hit lock, I don't want the alarm to go off on me in my own garage when the car was not locked, etc...). Anyway, I'm pretty anti alarm. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to live with it.

If anyone out there knows how to de-activate this thing without manually disconnecting it, I'm listening...

wait so that button makes the horn not honk when you unlock/lock it? I dont think anything happens on mine... which way is which, (pushed in is...? pushed out is...?)

You have to read the instructions. Doesn't matter wheter it's in or out.

Toggle between audible horn honk when locking/unlocking - Start with it in the out position. Turn key on and then off. Push button in three times. This will either turn the horn on or off, depending on how it was set up before.

Valet mode - with key in the on position, push the button in and leave it. The red light will stay on all the time.
