Upgrading my system on an '02 SR5

Hey everyone, I've been spending some time reviewing threads on this message board, but I haven't really been able to come to a conclusion as to what to do...so I thought I'd just ask.

I've got a factory installed system in my 2002 SR5 4Runner. It's got a tape deck, which I currently use for my mp3 player (I have a Zune, not an iPod - I've had 3 iPods die on me, so that's that).

I would like to upgrade the sound as easily and as cheaply as possible. I've been reading about this Scion deck that seems to be the quickest and lest expensive upgrade. I also noticed a cable that will allow you to hook-up (and charge) your iPod. Of course, as a Zune user, I'm wondering if there's an option for me.

Anyway, I don't necessarily need to go that route, but I wanted to mention it here.

If anyone has recommendations on upgrades from my current stock set-up, I'd really appreciate them. It is important to me to be able to have the Zune playing off the deck (charging isn't as big a deal, I have a cigarette lighter adapter). I'd love to be able to play it off something better than the current set-up, which is through the tape deck.

So your just looking for an HU upgrade? You don't want to upgrade your speakers or anything?

If you are just in it for a new HU, it would be hard to beat the Scion HU.

If you wanted more features the options are vast.

Well, I suppose it just depends on the cost for upgrading the rest. I brought up just replacing the deck because it seemed like a quick-fix. I'd be interested in doing a more full upgrade, assuming the cost is reasonable (and I really don't even know what reasonable is for something like this).

Well replacing the HU would be the first thing I would do. It makes a really big difference and is pretty easy to do.

Car audio is the same. It doesn't matter if you are talking about HU's or speakers. You can spend as much or as little as you want to. Most of the time the more you spend the better your audio will sound.

Gotcha. Well, if I get the Scion HU (by the way, which one fits my 4Runner, or are they essentially all the same?), only to later upgrade the speakers, would I then have to upgrade the HU again? Should I just do it all at once if a speaker upgrade is down the road for me?

I'm not that sure about the Scion HUs. I don't have one and have not read about them. There is a thread on them at the top of the page.

If you are even considering changing your HU and speakers I would do the HU first.

You can change your HU whenever you want and as many times as you want.

If you upgrade the HU now then yes, you can upgrade the speakers later without changing your HU again.
