Upgrading the brakes on a '96 with '02 Tundra parts

After getting a fairly good deal on a '96 4Runner, I decided to upgrade the brakes to the '02 Tundra brakes. Except for the caliper bolts that were seized into place (WD40 + Impact Wrench = pwned), this was an EXCELLENT UPGRADE that had to be done anyways. I owe thanks to this forum for all of the research. Once completed, the stopping power was probably 2 maybe 3 times better than before. The old brakes were very tired.

For all of my parts, I used a 2002 Tundra, 4WD, 6cyl, as the reference truck. (199mm)

(2) x 2002 Tundra Rotors $65 ea. (Carquest)
(2) x 2002 Brake Calipers $159 ea. (Carquest) (S13WE)
(1 set) x 2002 Brake Pads $98 for both. (OEM from Toyota dealership)

Tools: 17mm Impact socket, 10mm open wrench for caliper bleeder.
Time: 1hr per side once you're set up to work.

I found a set of Tundra calipers at a junkyard for $50, they want the old calipers though - why would the Junkers want the old ones back? Will they sell them to me and let me bring the old ones back when I'm done or do I need to bring the cores at the time of purchase?

I didn't really want to use junked parts on my truck but I cannot afford new calipers, I wlli get new rotors though.

Yeah, my girlfriend and I noticed right away that the truck didn't pull to left after the new brakes were installed. We're pretty happy. It wasn't safe before, so it had to be done.

@MAD -- Auto stores and auto-wreckers send the old calipers away for rebuilding so they can be resold. I paid for my calipers and the core charge, which was given back to me once I returned the old calipers. I think it was $75 for the old calipers.

With any part that has been sitting for a long time, you will want to check the rubber on the calipers to make sure they won't leak. I would stick to buying rebuilt ones if you can. Hope that helps.

Great job!! These tundra brakes feel made for our 4runners and definitely improve braking. I've loved mine since I put them on still to today, and I'm sure you will too!
