Uphill Start & Downhill Assist

Ok Guys, I have a question. We just purchased a new 4Runner last week. The owners manual isn't always written in plain english. If I am reading it correctly in order to use the Downhill Assist Control the vehicle must be in 4L?
And it must be in 4L for the Uphill Start to kick in. We have got plenty of places that we are going to try out all the stuff on it, I just wanted to make sure that I was reading everything correctly. I know that some of you have already used these features on your vehicle and could answer my question. Thanks!!

I'm not sure about Uphill Start, but you do have to be in 4L to use DAC

Downhill must be in 4L and uphill is anytime you are in drive and the vehicle rolls back.

Just let your foot off the brake when going uphill and allow the car to "attempt" to roll backwards. It will beep and fart a few seconds, and then if you have not added throttle, it will roll back......

It actually uses the gearing along with the ABS system to allow the vehicle to track down a significant hill without any throttle imput at all. Very sure-footed and safe.

If you are going down hill off road and have you have to apply the brakes, all the brakes are activated at once and you could get sideways and get to trouble real easy. With DAC The computer will pulse one wheel at a time to keep you going straight and safe. It works just like stability control.

I took a video while I was using DAC. It's not the best video but starting at about 1:00 I am not using any brakes at all. Just DAC in 2nd gear. You can kind of hear I working.

Yes, I used it while going down hill It worked just like Koz and ALLEGRO explained, and you must be in 4Lo. However, it does take a leap of faith to take your foot off the brake pedal while staring down a steep incline. IMHO, its a great feature.

It does go against all your normal driving logic to use this, especially looking straight down a slippery slope......but it does work.
