Upper ball joint and Control Arm Seized

I have a 99 4runner that I recently put new oem ball joints all the way around about a year ago. My upper control arm bushing is clunking now, so I thought it'd be a piece of cake to throw a lightly used control arm in there.

Boy was I wrong. I can't get the ball joint to drop from the upper control arm. I obviously don't want to damage the ball joint or else I would just use a pickle fork.

However I have hit the control arm with a BFH, I've used pb blaster, I've used heat to get the control arm warmed up and hit it, I've put a 2x4 on the ball joint and hit it even. No luck.

I even used a three jaw puller at the risk of damaging the ball joint and still couldn't get it to pop out.

Does anyone have any suggestions or tricks to get the ball joint out of the control arm?

Uhhh...dumb question....you did remove the snap ring from the UBJ, right? 'Cuz it ain't movin' if you didn't.

Not trying to get the ball joint out of the spindle.. Rather the threaded portion of the ball joint from the control arm.

I've never had this problem. Most of the time a few whacks on the control with a hammer causes the ball joint to just drop down.

They make an actual puller for that. I own one, but im sure you can rent it at autozone or something. Tighten the bolt on the puller and hit the bolt with a hammer. Tighten it a little more and hit it again, keep repeating this until it brakes free. If it still wont then get a touch and heat it up a little while doing the same process as above. Works everytime.

Yeah ive wacked mine a few times and it came out.


Can you put a 3 jaw puller on the stud and push on it, And wack is with a hammer? maybe add heat to that combo. You have all the right tools. just keep at it, hit it harder and use a bigger hammer. :uzi:
