Just purchased a 2015 4R Trail… wholly shit – what a beast. I’ve been driving an Xterra for the past 7 years (Pro for 4 years) and there is absolutely no comparison in these two vehicles. The 4R looks totally bad ass – the suspension is smoking hot – the engine hums out the torque – and the interior just blows the X away. Take all that and hook the Trail edition’s 4 wheel control system in to the equation and you’re totally crushing it.
I’ve been driving this sucker hard over the most unforgiving urban landscape you can imagine – the LIE – the BQE (Brooklyn Queens Expressway) – The Manhattan Bridge… this thing doesn’t budge. I’ve hit off ramps and turns so deep and hard it would have pulled the rear-end out and around on the Xterra with its leaf spring suspension and foul damping rates. Uneven road surfaces at highway speeds in excess of 70 mph - rain covered with the grease and oils from all the trucks – potholes – dead hookers – you name it. And shit if I can’t get these Dunlop Grandtrek AT20s (OE) to even so much as howl. For all I’ve read on these tires and how bad they wear and how crappy they are in the wet – I can’t get them to budge. The spring rate and suspension geometry on the 4R is just too good at getting the tire back to the road surface. My other car is a 5 liter 2007 Mustang and this friggin Beast just makes me feel like I can get rid of it. I am AMAZED at the handling characteristics of the T4R. Best vehicle purchase I’ve made…hands down.
I will be looking to fit her with new shoes regardless as to the performance appreciation I have for the Dunlop’s… they just don’t have the tread/sipe combination for the snow which has been considerable in the past 5 years. I’m down to 3 choices it seems – The Nitto G2 – Cooper Discoverer A/TW and Goodyear Wrangler AmorTrac. I won’t go heavier than a C load if I choose a LT.
I want to extend my appreciation to the forum as I have read extensively from it in making my choices as well as the pictures from other members that will in the future inspire me from the mod perspective. But for right now… Jesus – this ****ing truck ROCKS…
