USA Spec Ipod Adapter

Hi All,

Trying to install a PAC-15 ipod adapter into my 2003 Limited. I've got the 10 speaker JBL system, with indash 6cd and rear seat audio. No Nav or cd changer.

Anybody accomplish this successfully?!

I've plugged it into the back of the HU with their pigtails....doesn't recognize it. Tech support said I need to plug it into the ECU at the back by the woofer. Opened up this area but the plugs they've provided don't seem to fit.

Is the ECU the big silver unit that looks like an amp next to the sub?

i have installed this on my '05 limited and then transferred it on my '06 limited when i upgraded.. every connection is done on the back of the unit itself.. not sure what "ecu at the back of the woofer" you are talking about...
 
Yeah, the tech support asked if I had the rear seat entertainment....I said yes as I I thought he meant the wireless head phone gadget. So thats why he told me to plug in at the ecu located in the rear quarter panel.

So a few scraped knuckles, broken clip things, and a bunch of cursing later, tech support clarifies that this wasn't what they meant by rear entertainment. and that I should put my rear quarter panel together and break into the dash again.

So back to fiddling with the dip switches with the unit once again plugged back into my HU. I don't think my dash panels will ever be the same.

Now the story is that Canadian stereos must be different and the unit is not compatible. WTF?

2003 4Runner limited
JBL 10 spkr system with 6CD indash, rear sub, rear seat audio
USA Spec PAC15
Ipod nano (4th gen I believe...the new one)

What really gets me is that my GF said "You sure you want to drill that hole before you check it?" to which I said "Heck ya, it'll work fine".

that's what i was thinking... the only reason the tech would ask you to access the amp is if you have the entertainment option..
i have the same system as yours and i use the ipod 5th gen, ipod touch 2nd gen and nano 4th gen on my usa spec...

So in an 05, it worked.

You have the 6 cd in dash, no cd changer.

You just unplugged the little white plug from the HU, plugged the pac15 little white plug in its place, put the removed little white plug into the PAC15 pigtail and it worked by pressing the "CD" button until Disk 7 or 8 appeared.

I really don't think Toyota would send different HU's to Canada vs US. I'll try a new cable maybe.

Any Canadians out there with an 03 that this PAC15 worked in?
 
It worked on my 2004 4Runner Sport (US) with the 6 disc, 10 speaker JBL (non-nav) head unit. I bought my unit from eBay. (US dealer as well)

I would think that there isn't a difference between a US and Canadian head unit. The USA-Spec is just an inline deal. Unplug the harness from the head unit, plug it into the USA-Spec, plug it into the deck, make sure the dip switches are set correctly and that should be it.

With the radio on, and when I plug my 2nd gen nano in, it reconizes it right away.

ipod and nano will still work regardless.. only difference is if you have the older ipod cable, it will not charge the unit... but you can always buy the newer cable from usa spec or you can buy this adapter from scosche for your older cable which would allow you to charge your newer ipod/nano.

I have a 2005 with the standard single-CD, FM, AM & TAPE - no other auxilliary. Has anyone else used this iPod connection with that stereo set-up?? Does anyone know if you can unplug the TAPE and utilize that for the iPod??

The USA-Spec Pac-15 works with any non-navigation Toyota deck. The unit itself also has AUX inputs, so you can hook up your iPod and any other source you want with decent sound quality. (far better than an FM transmitter)
 
Another round of tech support and 2 more installs and the problem is fixed. Its NOT because of a Canadian stereo, but some Toyota stereos do not supply power to the USA Spec through its harness. I had to splice into the constant power from the stereo.

But it works!
 
can someone post pics of where you have the ipod cable coming out of the head unit? I am trying to figure out how to do this with my 2008 Limited.


Also, has anyone run the iPod cable to the center console where the aux input is located?
 
I just ran my cable into the little compartment underneath the climate controls. Its not a very big compartment, but it's a perfect size for an iPod. You will have to notch out a rectangular hole to get the cable in there.
 
Anybody who is looking into an ipod/iphone adapter, check out the Soundgate TOYPD2. Thats what I got and love it. ~$40 on eBay. It charges it while it plays it.

I just installed mine and put it below the climate control as well (based on Tempsho recommendation - thanks). I have to say that this is an ideal location. Easy to access and perfectly sized. I drilled a round hold in the plastic below the climate controls that was large enough for the round end of the plug.

Here's a photo of where I installed the unit. I figured by putting it here if I ever needed to access the aux inputs, I wouldn't have to take apart as much of the dash. There is plenty of cable in the kit.

This was my setup. I'm actually installing a new HU with a different iPhone/iPod interface but I'll probably run the cable the same way.

Looks like a way clean install. Nicely done if it was done by you. I'm stalling my USA Spec tomorrow and had a few questions for you if you don't mind. I'm probably going to do the same thing you had going there. What size drill bit did you use on that hole? Also, where did you get the circular gasket to make that hole look better? Where did you mount the adapter? Pictures? I don't have any available center console buttons, otherwise, that cradle would be sick
 
The rubber grommet I got from Home Depot. I just searched through till I found one that was the right size.

Here is something to think about. I did this install first when I had my V1. The cable for that one wasn't too big so it was easy enough to keep the hole small. Since then the cable has changed (from USA Spec) to accommodate the 3G, 3GS and 4. The cable is thicker (has a thicker suppressor or whatever those things are). Since I already had a hole it was nothing to make the hole bigger (which it was pretty big). But you might want to rethink it. Check your cable and see how small a hole the cable will work through. If it's approaching an inch wide then I probably wouldn't do it.

Underneath (where you'll be drilling) has a ton of extra plastic that makes it a pain to drill through. Lift that part up and feel underneath the tray. You'll see what I'm talking about.
