USB plug not working for Android?

On the drive home from the dealership, I noticed the USB plug didn't recognize my phone. I have an Android, and it didn't even charge when i plugged it in.

I went to the dealer today, showed the Service Advisor how it doesn't recognize my phone nor does it charge (I tried with two USB cables, and showed that it charges when plugged into the 12V adapter). He went and got an iPhone USB cable, plugged his iPhone in, and it worked immediately.

He spoke with a tech about software versions, etc... and said I'd need to leave the truck for an hour or two (I didn't have time at the moment).

What's the deal with the USB? Is it iPhone only? Or is there a software update that I need?

Not overly helpful I know, but my Galaxy S6 Edge charges fine from the USB. So does my wife's Galaxy S5.

Was either cable you tried the factory cable from your phone? I've had that issue in the past.

Neither our HTC or Sony Xperia will charge from the USB. Had to buy one of the cig. lighter adapters.

Just a guess.

There may be a current draw limit on the stock USB plug and your device(s) may be over that limit while the iPhone you tried may not have been over the limit. Check your devices, what current they need to charge, vs the 4Runner spec (which I can't find).

You're probably right, the IPod will charge off the USB plug. I think the bigger Android phones pull quite a bit of juice and may be over some limit, or the supplied current isn't enough for the phone to recognize it as a charge?

The USB is barley enough to charge my S5 and my new LG G4. I bought a cig plug with a 2.1 amp output and it charges much better. The blue tooth integration with the Android is great IMHO so I don't worry about plugging it in. Album art from Pandora shows up and everything.

I would recommend just getting a charger for the 12v outlet in the center console. Even if you did get it to work via the USB port, micro USB does not support audio streaming like the iPhone cord, so all that it will do is charge slowly as if you had it plugged into a laptop or something, which is about 30-50% as fast as a charger plugged into the wall. The 12v car charger will charge it much faster and your connection to Entune will be via Bluetooth anyway.

Try it again and double check the phone screen. My phine was intermittently asking how to connect (storage vs..) and wasn't doing anything until i selected it. No idea why it didn't always pop up to ask...

I have a '14 LE and a Motorola something or other. Charges through a USB on the runner but EXTREMELY SLOW. I have a 12V car cord and it works just like in other vehicles. I also have the spare USB power port on my cigarette lighter car cord. I can put the usb cord there and it charges normally too.

On my 2013 Trail the entertainment console has a warning screen about excessive current draw if I plug in my Android phone.

If your Android phone has a Qualcomm microprocessor, it may have Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0. Google it, or look at the phone's manual.

Then do yourself a favor and get a cigarette lighter to Quick Charge. I bought an Incipio one first, that had one outlet, then Aukey:

Samsung put their own microprocessor (Exynos???) in S6 I think and it doesn't have Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0

You can Bluetooth your music over to the audio system. You can also Bluetooth the audio for Google Maps over. I personally just ripped my CDs and put them on a USB drive, but I could see the advantage to keeping it all on your phone. I don't really have a lot of times I can listen to music on my phone, I work around noisy machines at work and need to keep my ear plugs in and my wits about.

I'm pretty sure the usb plug is limited at 500mA. It'll charge my Oneplus One, but very slowly. I use a 2.1A cigarette charger.

I was also facing this problem with my Samsung Galaxy S5. I did some online research but didn't get any solution. I got a clue on a technology form. Admin suggested me to visit a technology blog, and there I got a solution.
