I have a small USB hard drive (160 GB), but its called an iPod. I don't see why it wouldnt work, its just a big flash drive isnt it? Give it a whirl, let us know.

I figured somebody with the factory nav would have replied by now. I have no experience with the factory nav but a couple of things come to mind.

The USB power spec is 500mA. As long as your portable drive doesn't draw more than that you will be OK with regards to power. The problem is that many manufacturers ignore the spec both with motherboards (allowing > 500mA current draw) and with devices (drawing > 500mA). I've had hard drives before that would light up and seem to be running but not work because the motherboard port wouldn't put out more than 500mA.

The other thing I recall is that some hard drives use a different interface than thumb drives which works fine on computers but not on consumer goods (like the Philips DVD players). It had something to do with whether the device showed up as a hard drive or removable media. The factory radio may be looking for one type rather than the other.

Short version is, if one portable drive doesn't work try another. Also consider mounting the drive somewhere and providing external power (which will probably be the biggest problem IMHO).

There is an entire thread with clear instructions on how to use a portable HDD in your T4R. Do a thread search for it and you will find everything you need to know. And FYI this works great!
