I think I've solved the issue with the nav unit's extreme slowness when trying to browse through large lists of folders and files on a USB flashdrive. I've seen other people mentioning this same issue in a few different threads, so I figured I'd make a new thread about this problem specifically.
The problem:
When scrolling through the list of folders or files, it can be extraordinarily slow (on the order of 2-3 minutes per screen full of albums) and sometimes won't work at all. I only have about 50 albums on my flashdrive, and it still does this. I'd like to have a couple of *hundred* albums on there, so if only 50 causes this much trouble, I can only imagine what 200 would do.
The solution:
I spent the weekend experimenting, and I've think I've narrowed it down. When you list the folders, the screen only has enough width to show about 24 characters. Depending on how you named each album folder, the folders probably have far more than that. When they do, the system puts a little sideways scroll button next to the album name that lets you scroll the name sideways so you can see the whole thing. When you have a lot of albums on your flashdrive, all with long folder names, the system has to generate that little sideways scroll button for each one. That seems to cause it to slow way, way down and even break it sometimes. I put my flashdrive back in my computer and truncated each folder name down to a length that will fit on the nav unit's screen. That has solved the problem. I can now quickly scroll through the folder list with no delays.
I'd be curious to see if other folks are having the same issue. I used two different flashdrives, and they both behaved the same.
