Used car odometer reading to title - Has anybody gone through a similar situation ?

Recently purchased a 4Runner from private owner. Met up at a local bank and filled out the paperwork and did the transaction there. Made the mistake of guessing the mileage instead of putting what was actually on the car. The mileage written was 152,800 but the car has 152,500 - so then decided to overwrite the 8 with a 0 for it to show 152,000 - big mistake.

I showed up at the DMV and when they saw the overwrite they requested a form to be filled out by the seller affirming the odometer reading confirming it would be 152,000 so got the form and got it filled , and instead of actually writing the actual miles of the car, wrote the same 152,000 (mistake). Then I come to realize that the guy had been for service the day before and the last reported miles on carfax was 152,479 - I’m so mad at myself for such a dumb mistake but I guess it happens and I didn’t realize how important having the exact odometer reading.

My question is - did I just shoot myself on the foot and now my title will display odometer discrepancy ? Has anybody gone through something similar?

Any overwrite on a Florida title is not cool.
You are lucky they are not requiring the seller to get a replacement title first.

If you want to be 100% safe, get the seller to complete the form with the proper mileage and just to be safe I would have it notarized if you meet him again at a bank.

If you are going to a real FLHSMV office I would probably not fill out the form for the seller especially since this has already been flagged.
Not a issue of mileage, an issue of signatures.

I hope you can get it resolved.
Two things though:
First, if I was the seller and getting constant communications around "errors" made with mileage discrepancy and dealing with the transfer, I'd be pretty irritated. Went through a similar situation when selling my wife's car when we first got together.
Second, you are admitting fault on a public website on the internet to illegitimately filling out the paperwork required by state government for the transfer of a vehicle. I'm no lawyer, but that is not recommended...

You filled out the original title from the person you bought it from? The seller is supposed to verify the mileage of the vehicle, not the buyer.

You need to get everything corrected at the DMV. Ask them what you need to do to make this right. Your intention was not to defraud. Here's a link that may be of use to you.

I had a big cluster when I bought a used motorcycle (KLR250) with 132 miles showing on the odo. Apparently, when the previous owner bought it, they guessed and put 300 miles on the title transfer. The bike was an utter cream puff so I didn’t care if it had 132 or 300 actual miles. The DMV sure did.

Shudder to think what your tax returns might look like ha.

I suppose all you can do come clean with the dmv, apologize, act dumb and say you got confused and were in a hurry and do the forms again from scratch. Maybe get that guy you bought it from a gift card to Autozone for the hassle. I dunno.

Yeah this. Whatever you do OP don't dig yourself even deeper if that's what youre trying to ask! I wouldn't worry too much it must happen all the time with people trying to take shortcuts.
