Used tires and new spare?

I have 4 Goodyear duratrac 265/70r17's which have 15.5/32nds of tread left (new is 18/32nds) on my full-time 4wd v8. I'd like to get a spare (exactly the same tire, just new) and work it into the rotation.

Does toyota have a specification for the maximum tread depth difference on the full-time system? Will tossing a new tire into the mix at this point cause too much of a difference in wheel speed?

Not directly, as far as I know, but, by implication, their same side recommended tire rotation with the spare going to just one side seems to give a pass to about 4/32nds or less difference. When I looked into this a long time ago, that number matched up well with other sources of info.

If it were me, I'd do it. Just rotate the tires in a way that keeps the new one always in until it gets close in tread depth.

3/32 difference in thread depth translates into a negligible difference in circumference - 0.6%. So go ahead, get the tire and work it into your rotation.

Pretty much what I was thinking ...but wanted to run it by the experts first. Dealership answer was that there could be no more than 1/32nd in difference, but I suspected that might have been an effort to sell a brand new set.

3/32nds should be fine, but put the fresher tire on the road to get it worn down right off the bat. Another option would be to have the tire shaved to match the others (tirerack offers this service, it's like $15 more), I've done this when I needed a replacement for the wife's Legacy after she hit a pothole and bulged the sidewall on one of the tires.

Edit: I see the guy asking has likely been driving on the tires for a while already, oh well.

No problems at all fitting the Duratrac in 265/70R17 underneath.

IanB, This information from Tire Rack.com is exactly what I was looking for. I just bought a 2008 T4R V8 4WD and noticed the spare has never been used. Since I want to do the recommended 5 tire rotation I checked the tread depth - 11/32 spare and 6/32 for the other 4 tires. Since I don't want to replace these Michelin LTX M/S2's for a few more miles (and I get my lift kit and spacers installed) I am going to look into either buying a used Michelin with the same 6/32 tread or find a Tucson tire shop that can shave the spare. Thanks for posting the link!
