Used Ziebart? Please Chime in

We just moved from TX to OH and I am beside myself thinking of my trucks rusting out.

Two people have recommended Ziebart, so I stopped at the local Ziebart and talked with the sales guy. He claims he has seen vehicles done 20 years ago and still looking good.


Anyone have it and what are your feelings on it?

I have lived in Ohio my entire life. When I was younger, my parents used Ziebart on all our cars. I don't remember it doing much to expand the life of the car. Other components wore out well before the frame falling apart that required the vehicle to be replaced. I have owned several cars during my adult life and have not had an issue. Again, before the frame fell off in pieces, other parts of the car died that caused me to replace it. In short, I don't know if I would spend my money on it. I think most car makers today do a good enough job and the metals used today are more corrosion resistant. I am no expert, of course, just speaking from personal experience.

During the winter, about once a week, I use a hose and warm water to spray the underside. My 4Runner is going into its third winter and I see minor surface rust on the frame. Nothing that concerns me.

I just moved to Columbus for my company to open a new warehouse. I am mostly concerned about the rust because my 4th gen is 10 years old and i just bought this 2013, not to mention my 1986 4runner. All of them are TX vehicles with ZERO rust and I want to keep them that way.

From hat i understand is the Ziebart is like using a bullet proof jacket as a police officer, you put it on and hope it is covering where you may get shot.

I will invest in some undercoating and i may decide to to the Ziebart if i cannot get my pulse down over the rust.

BTW, I have seen DOZENS of vehicle rusted quite badly here so far and some of them (alot of fords) are pretty new.

its been awhile since I looked into it. What would they charge for it? I have also heard from some that it actually CONTRIBUTES to rust, but I have nothing solid to back that up. I know years ago, they used to drill holes in the body of car (inside door frames and trunk area) and inject the product in, and some thought the rust actually increased around those drilled holes. I don't know if they still do that. If you are thinking just of spraying the underbody, it may be worth it for piece of mind. You are obviously concerned, and the price may be worth it to put your mind at ease. Keep us updated on what you do.

I live in the rust belt too. I had a car Ziebarted, but it was sooo long ago that I can't imagine they still use the same procedure eg drilling holes.

I remember they required an annual check up, at which time they re-gooped it, and I can recall the goop dripping on the garage floor for awhile. If you do any rust treatment, read the warranty veeeery carefully. They're in business to make money, not repair cars.

Would I treat a modern car? ... no ... but I no longer keep a car that long either.

During salt weather I take our vehicles through a car wash that sprays the underbody.

I reply as I watch OPERATION PACIFIC on the Military Channel. I'm a vet of the "knee-deep navy", a shallow water sailor...aka USCG. God, I love the old sea-faring war movies!

As to Ziebart... I used it on a couple of my past trucks in the 70's. My dad ALWAYS had his cars undercoated and Ziebart seemed better, even with the drilling. I always followed the recoating requirements. Neither of those trucks ('76 Chev Blazer, '79 Jeep Cherokee) developed any body rot for the few years I owned them.

I have also read owner's manuals that warned against coating the underside of the vehicle. They basically said that the manufacturer had done a good enough job of rust-proofing. I had a Chev Tahoe for 14 years before I got my 4Runner two years ago. No rust treatment and just starting to get some cancer at the bottom seam of the barn doors.

The Ziebart shop I used gave up the Ziebart name a loooong time ago, although I think they may still do some type of rust-proofing because I see municipal dump trucks (used for winter plowing, brining and salting) there.

I haven't even thought about extra rust-proofing on the 4Runner.

BTW I live at the Jersey shore....three blocks from the beach.

Unless you really live in the rust belt or next to the ocean, I doubt that the Ziebart (or other similar service) is really worth it with today's vehicles. Most new cars have such good resistance to corrosion and they don't use as much "steel" as cars of thirty or forty years ago did.

I live in VA and you see plenty of cars down here that are 25+ years old and still rust-free. They don't use much road salt during the winter months like they do up north, so that is much easier on your car's body.

If I lived north of MD (including OH, NY, MI, WI, PA, CT, NH, etc.), I suppose it might be worth it for a brand-new car or one that you plan to keep for at least ten years. Anywhere in the South? Perhaps not.

old school approach is painting the underside each Fall with the used engine oil. Last Fall I sprayed the underside of my bro laws fj62 with aerosol cans of white grease, paying special attention to seams and other nooks and crannies where salt residue might collect.
