Looking good. My vote is to leave the cubby hole and add some sort of lip to the top shelf so things don't slide into the cubby hole.

I like that idea, that's easy enough. I have to give a few more days to confirm that I like it. If I do then I'll get the plastic board and do it right to include a lip and a new mat cut to fit the shelf in the up position. My mat was cut to fit with the shelf down.

Chris , I really don't see what your trying to accomplish here , maybe Ill get a clearer view in the AM ....lol
I have the DD cargo option it is great !! Its ben in the locked down position since I got it 2 1/2 years a go....lol. I've got a lot of crap back there but can easily put it to one said and flip the back seat down if I need to sleep back there.

I have the DD cargo shelf because I couldn't buy without one. I could never see a use for it since there is not enough space under it for much. I took it out and now have about 2" more cargo room which I need when packing for a trip. The only problem is the transition at the front that leaves a 2" floor ledge. I put a piece of carpet over it but would welcome a better idea.

OP, I would buy or make some drawers for your project. other wise that space under, as mentioned, is pretty useless.

What ia am attempting to accomplish is to carry my basic gear (jumper cables, tools, tie-downs & straps etc) and have the vehicle not cluttered for whatever the day throws at me. Audiqtr stumbled onto an unmentioned point; that is the pooch! Having the floor empty and flat without a dropoff is really nice for that. I have got one of those furry fish (Yellow Lab) that has to ride back there or I'd kill her
She's a floppin', pantin' whinin' mo fo in the car. She loves it and over-stimulates like a little kid.
If I had zero interest in efficiency and it wasn't my DD I'd buy a cool expedition rack for the roof, put a box on/in it and call it a day.
I like the inside of a car to be uncluttered, sort of clean and I like to be able to throw a box in it, 2-3 suitcases or a few bags of groceries without a major rearrangement. (A couple of suitcases is a biggy for me.) That is my goal and I am just trying to sort out my options.
My old Trooper had an under rear seat storage that helped and I bolted an ammo box under the hood. My Titan had great storage under the rear seat (not to mention the covered bed). I am just looking to recapture/create some of that space in my T4R. I know a little shelf to make a flat floor is a bit cheeseball but it may accomplish what I want.
The downside is when I flip a rear seat forward for a larger item the floor is at two levels unless I unpack and set everything on top including my little shelf. To do that is a pain but doable. If I had real drawers I couldn't do that unless I planned in advance because what would I do with the drawers?
I know there's no 'right answer' for everybody or it would be built in. Thanks for the feedback guys, it really does help to bounce this kind of stuff off of other folks:bigok:
