V-6 4x4 transfer case; Thai

I just read your thread about the 4x4 binding in 4Hi.
I was just about to get the Sport V6 w/ 4x4 so I could still drive around in 4WD. You said that it cause binding.
So in essence , the 4x4 in the V6 should only be used in poor driving conditions and not as an All wheel drive vechile?

P.S. I drove the Sport V6 4x4 again on Tuesday and jecked the wheel back and forth in a large parking lot and turning sharply onto the freeway entrance ramp and it sold me on the X-eas!

Hmm, I think that I have read most all of the threads in this Forum and I don't remember seeing any place where Thai said this. In fact, he has stated, repeatedly, that 4WD mode in the 6 cyl models is exactly the same as 4WD mode in the 8 cyl models. The difference is that in the 6 cyl models you have the additional option of selecting 2WD mode.

4WD mode in both the 6 and 8 cyl models is a full time 4WD because of the center Torsen limited slip differential.

It is only when you go into 4WD mode AND lock the center differential do you get a mode that should only be used on mud, ice etc.

dcampen is right.

My previous discussion is for 1996-1998 4runners, which cannot be in 4wd on dry pavement. Starting in 1999 and upward (including 4th gen 4runners), you CAN use 4-HI on dry roads. Basically, you can leave it in 4wd all the time if you want.

So, go ahead, buy the 4runner...you'll love it!
