v-8 4x4 conversion

Hindsight is 20/20, and I should have got 4 wheel drive. Just never thought I would want to take a 30k vehicle offroad. Anyone out there done a conversion yet? I know of 3rd Gens. that have done it, but not 4th. I know it would be alot less headache to sell and buy a 4x4, but I was thinking of a selectable transfercase, out of a Tundra.

Its been discussed before, do a search. I think the general opinion was it would be way to expensive and very difficult to do.

You should not do it. If you are really really wanting 4x4, then trade in and get the 4runner that you want.

With the powertrain transplant, you're looking at big $$. In addition, it will be hard to sell your car afterwards. The powertrain may not work as good or you may have trouble due to improper installations. Just a lot of headache IMHO. It's not worth it at all.

Chances are that you would have to replace the tranny since the output shafts are different. Those trannies are new and hella $$$. Plus there are no manual hub kits that make life so much easier for a swap. Having to figure out how to make the 4x4 ecu work with the rest of the runner would not be fun.

Trade in what you have for what you want. It will be cheaper.

Yeah just trade it in. I thought about doing a conversion but its way too much money. You would be hacking more stuff up minus any type of warranty if you went that route. I sold mine private party sale and after all was said and done i went from a 2wd v6 SR5 to a 4wd V8 SE for about 500 dollars. And that was done of course, after much researching and reading posts like these. Good luck

or you could rip out that IFS and throw a solid axle under it... get a transfer case and a few other parts, and your one of the first 4th gens to have a SAS, if not the first... but then again its prob 10k... to do that on your truck, good luck

trade it and get the 4x4

Buy what you want. Save the conversions for the older trucks and older technology.

Runnerup got the idea, SAS. Ideas anyone? I already understand the negatives. Lets hear the wrench turning grease monkeys speak. Front axle combos, springs, transfercase, etc.

i dont really know where to start, check out demello offroad's SAS on a 2005 Tacoma, after that, check out the SAS kit that all pro offroad has out for the 2005 tacoma, im not sure what the differences are in the new body taco and new body 4runner.... but an SAS is serious stuff, are you building this to be a show truck? because you dont come across as the type to be a serious offroader...

if you plan on doing this, then be sure to brush up on your welding skills and fabbing skills, as you will need them. look at TTORA and figure out what you want to do, check out yotatech.com as that is more the SAS spot than this, but be forewarned, if you just go in there with a 2wd 4runner wnating to convert it and throw a solid axle under it, a few people are not going to be very nice, but its your truck, if you want to do it, do it, im sure a few people would even be up to help you if you supplied proper equipment... beer... good luck, and keep us updated, any more questions or requests for pics let me know
