V6 2wd Auto to 2wd Manual swap

i tried searching with no avail.

many people have done the 2wd auto to 4wd manual swap but i cannot find anyone that has done a 2wd auto to 2wd manual swap

i found a r150 2wd manual trans off a tacoma

i did research and only the tacoma and tundra ever came 5vz v6 2wd manual

none of the 4runners v6 5vz came manual 2wd only 4wd manual

i know the basic stuff about the pedals, clutch, slave, etc.
i might have to move the trans mount and may have to extend or shorten the driveshaft. I will find out when i mock it all up

the question i have is i know the 4wd guys need the manual ecu due to all the 4wd stuff. do i need a manual ecu also for the 2wd or can i just get away with bypassing the park/neurtral switch only just to get it to start. i dont have to worry about all the 4wd stuff checking in because im already 2wd.

only reason i chose this route is because i cannot find a good enough trans shop to rebuild the auto i have that last longer than a year before crapping out.

i also tried to buy a brand new 2wd auto transmission from toyota but they are no longer avail. only the 4wd auto trans are still avail.

There are no 4WD checks for a manual trans ECU. The Auto 4WD ECU doesn't check anything either, but does change shift patterns a bit in 4LO, that's it.

You can use a V6 4WD MT ECU of matching year on your truck just fine.

I could be wrong. I thought that the OP wanted to change his 2wd automatic to a 2wd 5 speed manual.

Seems to me it would make more sense to sell yours and find a 4wd. That'd be a whole lot less work, wouldn't it?

i have a 2000 limited

im going to see if my 2wd auto driveshaft will work. if i cannot find a driveshaft that works then i will have to have a custom length one made to fit

My 4WD swap cost me <$1k and a couple weekends of beer drinking and hanging out with buddies doing the work (that $1k includes beer and maintenance parts). If you can find a 4WD for less than $1k over the price of a 2WD, go ahead...

I had an 02 sport 2wd, damn thing wouldn't climb a curb with the open rear diff, had to put a tru trac in it to make it worth a damn.

After doing that and seeing how useless a 2wd is in ice and snow mud whatever because it's so light, I vowed to never have another 2wd runner.

Sell it. get a 4wd and never look back.

Did you read at all before commenting on this thread? It's in the first post why asianalpha wants to go this route.

I thought the OP had a reasonable reason to go this route.

People can't understand why I even bother to rebuild Frames and fix up old 3rd gens. To me it's my hobby..


I really don't blame the OP for wanting to keep his rig going. If you can't get a new remfg transmission auto. You might was well go manual.

I kinda like the thought of a 2wd 5 speed as that wasn't a factory option.

I am looking forward to the OP build thread on this project.

I don’t really think the op cares if you would prefer a 4wd 4Runner, and what are you climbing curbs for? Quick getaway after stealing a pack of white owls from the gas station?

i live in california.. so ice is not a big deal. the runner handles fine when i go boarding in big bear with light ice.. im not trying to track through 4+ inches of snow..

i have a detroit tru trac in mine with 5.29 gears and it picks up just fine and can do what some 4wd drivers cant.. its all in the driver's experience.

ive had my fair share of 4wd. Rock crawling and mudding is not for me.

smashing up frame, breaking axles and getting stuck in the middle of nowhere or in mud waiting for someone to tow you out is no fun.

Looks like the Tacoma 2WD R150 uses a slip yoke output just like the 4Runner auto, so you should be good there. It'll just be a length question, which you can figure out by measuring the length of each transmission and adding/subtracting from your current driveshaft to compensate. Hopefully the shifter hole lines up - it should though, since the Tacoma (1st gen) and 4Runner share that alignment.

You'll be able to start/drive your 4Runner with the MT if you jumper the neutral safety switch, though there will be a check-engine light.

at least i could run it the way it is with the jumper until i find a manual ecu or maybe even meqasquirt it
