V6 4x4 Mpg

I know lots of folks post about MPG

Today I drove from just north of Los Angeles to Sacramento

exactly from Simi Valley to El Dorado Hills - 413 miles. 5 hours 40 minutes end to end and 22.8 gallons. 1 stop for gas and bathroom, maybe 10 to 15 minutes

Average speed based on time/miles = 76Mph (mostly at about 85 or so - often up over 90 (thanks Mr Vallentine for the V1)

18.1MPG

and the truck was loaded with books and all sorts of house moving stuff, so running heavy

Previously I had a 89 Chevy Tahoe, 350 V8, auto 4x and to be honest I loved that darn truck, but

It killed me on gas milage, on a run like this at speeds up just over 90 on the trip, it probably would have gotten maybe 10 to 12 Mpg - and maybe 14 as an average for the trip

I miss the carrying capacity and sheer roomyness but

I beleive the T4R is a better off roader and hell gas is no longer $1.60 a gallon like when I bought my 350

I paid $3.30 tonight filling up in northern ca

Hey magnum, havent seen you for awhile on the boards.

I just filled up tonight, spanning from the 8th till today I averaged 17.23. Overall I average 17.51 spanning since 12/23/07 for 5 fillups. My lowest was 16.39 highest was 18.41, and thats mostly 4-5 mile trips to school through city streets, with the trip to norden every other week to go snowboarding. I wish it was higher 18 average... but from what I understand, and from what I thought I was going to be averaging... I'm doing pretty Good!

Besides the otherside of decent mileage is owning KICK-ASS TRUCK!

I have a V8 and and too am happy with the milage for a v8. I too come from a Tahoe ( 04 Z71 ) and miss the room , but I love the 4R.

I recently bought a 2000 4x4 Tahoe for my dad to use with 90k on the clock , and it's ok , but you sure can tell difference in how it handles ....night/day.

I figure that Magnumfans's old Tahoe had the areodymics of a cinder block. The 4Runner is similar to a regular sized brick. 18.1 with that average speed is damn impressive!:clap:

I just filled up yesterday. Mostly suburban driving in pretty ideal temps yielded 19.37mpg by the calculator. I am very happy as it's warm enough that I'm using the air some and on a quick run into the store I leave it runnin' with the A/C for the dog. That's mostly 2wd with a little 4HI.

I am assuming most of your trip was in 2wd? I've noticed if it's windy or raining the 4HI mode adds a good shot of stability to the ride/drive characteristics. I haven't done the same trip twice to determine exactly how much of a penalty there is for using 4HI. I think it's a little less than 1mpg but I'm not sure.

Yeah, the whole trip was in 2WD - I considered putting it in 4WD going up/down the grape vine, there was snow about, but not on the road surface at that point, but it was very windy the whole trip. My wife drove the first couple of hours from sacramento south on Thursday and the wind pushed us all over the place. I took over when it started raining and it rained for the next 4 or 5 hours all the way into LA.

To your point, I am going to try 4WD sometime when it is really windy, to see if that would give me any more stability

and yes guys, I have not been on this board much lately, but if you watched my emails/output. at work, you would think I am a work-a-holic. so its just available time...got to pay the bills

.300 WinMag (everything else - bear down to squirrels) - I once got 10 sqirrels with one shot from it. disintegrated a rock in front of them and they all got taken secondary projectiles from the rock

I used to be an owner of a gun store in the bay area. until the state AG of CA suied us out of business....nice guy that - Bill Lockyear, especially since we provided most of the automatic weapons to the various state agencies.

I dont tend to hunt upland game, except for quail, just mostly bear and deer.

to answer your question, no the frigging wind yesterday just pushed me around on the highway for 6 odd hours. i was well and truely beat by the time I got home. It was worse driving down to LA on Thursday night, the trip took about 8 hours in the rain and wind. and we probably only got like 15mph with that headwind. nasty trip.

i added up my gas (full tank at start and end) and just divided it by the milage.

the onboard computer was saying something like 21 or 22mpg most of the trip

Ok, cool. Yeah, I noticed on my friend's 4th Gen, the OBC would be off by 1-2MPG (for better or worse) everytime.

Got 20 MPG hiway mileage on a recent road trip to Florida with our V8 4WD. Speeds ranged from 55 to 80 depending on construction zones (pretty much half of Georgia), traffic, and P.O. presence.
