V6 and V8

The 4.7L V8 is a battle-tested virtually bullet proof engine. It's been used in the Land Cruiser for years, and is the same engine that's used in the Tundra and the Tacoma as well as the Lexus LX470 and the GX470.
Extraordinarily smooth, the engine gets great gas mileage for a V8, with most people reporting between 16mpg and 19mpg based on individual driving styles and conditions.
The V6 is a great engine as well and has been used for a number of years. The mileage on the V6 is surpisingly NOT that much different.
I have a V8 on my 2 week old 07 Sport Edition and absolutely love it.
In the end, to each his own, but for the difference in price, I would get the V8. Just my 2 cents worth!

You should search the threads... This has been a hot topic of debate for many years, and each engine has it's own strengths and weaknesses.
V8 is a great towing machine, but the future of this engine is a little cloudy with 3 new V8's in Toyota's line up, will the 4.7L make it 4? This engine is currently in the 4runner and LandCruiser (but only until September in the Cruiser). This engine was the workforce of the Tundra, LandCruiser, and the Sequoia for many years. Also keep in mind that this engine is the only choice in the Lexus counterpart of the 4Runner.
V6 is a great everyday engine and has the convience of having a 2WD option (V8 does not have this) in a 4WD model. Also this engine is shared between the FJ, Tacoma and the 4Runner.
Mileage does differ that much between the two, maybe as little as 10% or as much as 25% depending on driving habits (I've gotten 25 MPG highway out of my V6 with passengers).

get the v8... extra power, proven reliablility, and fulltime 4wd is def worth the extra money. and if you ever sell it, it will have a higher resell value.

If I were to buy my Sport again, I would probably get the V8. However, in my region, the V8's are hard to come by in the trim I wanted (mostly Limiteds with the V8 everywhere I looked). I wasn't about to special order it either since I'm an impatient b@stard. On the other hand, I love my v6's. I know it's a small point in its favor but I love the top mounted filter location and the timing chain. A little louder than the V8, but I didn't buy the 4runner expecting a quiet engine. But I do envy the fact that the V8 is full time 4wd and you don't have to give it a second thought (plus it comes with a tranny cooler standard, big +). I know you can run the v6 in 4wd all the time but sometimes it's also fun to run it in 2wd. Btw, I do tow once in a great while but nothing over 4k lbs. Like others have said, you test drive both and see whichever floats your boat.
Hi! My '05 SE 4Runner has a V8 engine and I love it! I was prepared to get a V6, but my husband insisted that we test drive both of them. To us (particularly my husband, who knows a lot about engines), the V8 was much, much smoother as well as more powerful. He felt it would perform better in the long run.
A few months after we bought it, we purchased a trailer to tow around our Gator utility vehicle so that the extra power came in handy.
Test drive both, then it's up to you. But I am glad I listened to my husband!
