V6 engine noise - is this normal?

I'm wondering if everyone has this noise in their V6 or if something is wrong with mine..I bought it used with 6K miles on it and it has made this noice the whole time I have owned it...

Basically I only hear the noise when I am going about 10-15 miles per hour, when I have the gas pedal just slightly pressed. It sounds like a grinding noise or just a kinda like an old engine noise. If I press the gas pedal more it goes away or if I let off of the gas pedal it goes away.

I mostly notice it when I am going that speed to look for a parking spot or if I am speeding up slowly. Once I hit higher revs the noise or even just get going over 25 the noise is gone and I never hear it again.

Does anyone know what this could be? Mine is a 2005 V6 2 wheel drive SR5.

Not really a ticking sound

Thanks for the reply, but its not a ticking sound.

I can keep this sound almost constant if I am slightly pressing the gas going 10 mph...Like a low grinding sound. If I press the gas harder, it goes away, if I let off the gas, it goes away..

Really weird..

I don't know, perhaps a heat shield or something?

Sounds like somehow you are setting up some mechanical harmonics that at certain rpms or velocities you hear:

If you have skid plates, check to make sure that they are not rubbing on your exhaust system. This may sound weird but if the plates are bolted to the frame then the sound could travel and it might appear to be coming from other than the source. As the other person said, a heat shield...could very well be touching an exhaust pipe.

Also check your belts and pullies...it could be coming from there at a certain rpm.

1. thanks for that link CJ3FLYER. my truck makes that ticking noise. kinda sounds like a valve tap but not really. my friend says it sounds like exhaust leak. im hope it really is normal tho cause it annoys the crap outta me!.. i plan to dig in a little deeper this weekend to try and find something, but reading that was reassuring

2. on the other topic, primags, check out your silencer box/tube thing that leads to your air filter. not sure if thats the sound, but the bolts fastening it down came loose on mine and they would kinda rattle, tick at certain rpms and went away when i gassed it. i tightened the bolts and it was gone. again not sure if thats the sound, but i figured its worth a try...
 
Hey Primags, did you ever find your rattle? I have the same thing. Sounds like a heat shield. It only rattles when idling in gear.

Mine makes a rattle sound when barely hitting the gas pedal. I don't know how else to describe it. It's not really a grinding noise, but it seems to come from the underside of the vehicle. Possibly a heat shield or skid plate.

Thats exactly what mine is doing. I plan on crawling under the car today and checking out the heat shields.
 
me too

another victim here. i guessed it was a heat shield (tinny noise when you just barely get on the throttle and goes away soon after) but i have been too busy to get under there before it gets dark out here in Wisconsin. if someone finds the exact source, do a brotha a favor and save me some time by posting it here.

No. It sound like a harmonic rattle of a piece of thin tin. At a certain speed (10 MPH or so) and slight throttle pressure (just barely accelerating) the item in question rattles loudly from the engine bay. It sound like a heat shield, I just haven't found it. Sound like the OP and I have the same thing.
 
Hmm...just a random thought, but have you tried to find someone with a dyno? That way you could put the 4R up there and have someone sit in the drivers seat while the hood is open and then see if you can locate it. Of course follow all safety measures when using the dyno....if you plan on being in front of or behind the vehicle ;)
 
Same problem, no idea what. Mine makes the noise when I come off of it. Any updates on what it was guys?

Mine did that for a while... There's a clamp on the back of the catalytic converter that secures it to the pipe. Check it. The binding bolt rusted/broke and the loose clamp was rattling on top of the pipe at the speeds you mentioned.

Can you take a pic of said clamp?
 
Try to move a heat shield around both catalytic converters, when vehicle is cold. If it easily moves, just cut the sheild off. In Toronto most of the cars that have them have issues like that due to rust and most of the time shields are so rotten that it's not worth it to play with it.

It seems most timing chain Toyota V6 engines sound like tractors....I'd call it normal. Likely a combination of 3 timing chains, the VVti assemblies, and thin modern oil
 
You'r posting this 2005 V6 4Runner has 6,000 miles is this correct? Or do you mean the engine has been rebuilt and now has 6,000 miles on it?
Anyway you should not be hearing this type on noise.

My 2008 V6 2wd 4Runner has no such tractor like sounds, it's really the best V6 engine being made.
