V6 or V8

I also believe you can't go wrong with either however another vote for v8!

I almost got a v6 myself because I felt that the v8 would be a gas guzzler and not be as reliable but I must say, 176k and purrs like a kitten or should I say tiger lol. I am familiar with the 4.0 as well, also have an FJ with the 4.0, nice motor but not really much in mpg comparing when both were stock and no comparison in torque and get up n go. Our FJ is 6 speed manual however, I drove 4.0 tacomas, Runners and FJ's in auto and it cannot compare with the 4.7 in the Runner. Get the v8! You'll be glad you did. If anything all time all wheel drive gives you better traction so I don't look at it as a negative. Not to mention that smooth v8 sound out of the exhaust is music to da ears! :becky:
 
Just a question, but with the V8 and the full time 4wd is there a 4lo switch? Or is it simply just AWD and no switch?

Not finding the '06-09 4wd V8 I want 'round here almost had me wanting to consider a V6...until now. There goes that hesitation ;) V8 it is.

I had an '06 V8 and now have an '05 V6. If I buy another 4th gen down the road, I'd prefer the V8.

The 4.7 is one of the finest motors Toyota has ever made. It's smooth and torquey and as trouble-free as anything mechanical can be.

Just another opinion.
 
I've gone 368,000 miles on the same V6 timing chain. Just food for thought! 3 timing belts @ $500 a piece, I just saved $1500 on my car insurance!
 
For me the choice was simple.

I tow a 6000 lb boat up a 7000 foot grade every year.

Only one engine can handle this, the V8.
 
For argument sake let’s say performance wise both the V6 and V8 are equal. Equal horse power, mileage & long lasting.
There is one thing a V6 will never ever give you, the low guttural growl of a V8.
Lots of V6 guys try to change the tone, but the sound of a V8 is very discernible and to old guys like me it’s kind of soothing.
 
Dealer I just bought my '16 from said I was sitting on a gold mine with my 07 V8 Sport. Only 53k and nothing wrong inside or out.

I'm guessing it was a combination of the crappy economy and high gas prices that were occurring when the 5th gen was being developed and released that killed the V8 T4R - things were so bad you'll recall that Toyota not only dropped the V8 they even brought back the 4-banger 2.4L for the first year of the 5th gen :D

Sales in the USA according to Wikipedia went from 103,000 in 2006 to 87,000 in 2007 to 47,000 in 2008 to 19,000 in 2009 - we're probably lucky they didn't kill the T4R. Now that gas is super cheap sales are zooming up - I wouldn't be surprised to see them bring back the V8 option for the 6th gen.

Let's not forget that according to Toyota the 4.0 in the T4R was Toyota's 1st ever:
-aluminum truck engine
-VVTi truck engine
-variable intake (ACIS) truck engine
-use of 3D modelling in an engine design

So yes, I will go out on a limb and call the 4.0 a great engine :) It has been the primary powerplant of the T4R for 2 full generations now and for at least 14 model years and counting.

i think its easier to find a V8 4runner for sale than the v6.. Least in my search for 6 months..

I don't get the appeal of the non VVT V8 version in the older 4th gen 4runners.. that engine is the worse of the line up IMO by a wide margin..followed by the 4 speed V6...

SO the comparison should be the 5 speed V6 vs the VVT V8.. the 4 speed V6 and the non VVT V8 engines are the bottom 2 choices..
 
So I am sitting here fairly depressed. The dealer sent the final pics of the unit I was hoping to buy and when taking it outside it looks like the damn thing was driving through a briar patch. Doors all scratched up. The frint and rear bumpers were already scratched which was fine but now the sides. So I went from extreme excitement to being pissed off. I am on month 5 now and quite frankly getting tired of looking at 4runners trying to find the right one. I am not looking for perfect, but come on who treats their truck like that.
