V6 or v8?

Let's not forget the V8 "technically" can take regular gas.

V6 - 18 gallon fill up at $3.20 = $57.60 (21mpg, 378mi on a tank)
V8 - 18 gallon fill up at $3.00 = $54.00 (18mpg, 324mi on a tank)

378-324 = difference of 54 approx. miles on a tank. @ $3.00 for regular, 18mpg, you're looking at 3 more gallons to travel the same number of miles in the V8 as you would in the V6, $9.00 total, minus the premium fuel difference of $3.60, you're looking at $5.40 per tank difference.

Fill up once a week, driving 17k miles per year, at you're still only looking at an annual increase in fuel cost of about $281 (plus the one-time cost of the V8 upgrade)

Bottom line is that it's not worth debating on whether or not to get the V6 for better fuel economy. It's a truck. If you want fuel economy, go get a daily driver 4cyl vehicle. In other words, glad you picked the V8 :) It's a good choice.

Good summary. Like I had said earlier, I understand that for many people out there the difference of 20 cents a gallon can impact their budgets. Luckily for me I'm not in a situation where a hundred bucks a month is going to make any difference to me. My concern was off road capability and whether or not one was better than the other...not even so much as for the motor (and subsequent power and torque) but more so because I wasn't sure if the 4wd was as good on the V8 since it's full-time 4wd. Didn't know if they were comprable systems once you go into 4lo, etc. Now that I know they are the same in the dirt...I picked the V8 and I'm loving every second of it!

If you're coming from a supra where you're sacrificing everything to get that extra hp, I would expect you to get nothing less than the V8. When's the mods going in? :D

Haha, yeah...it's been a little rough giving up a few hundred horsepower in a lighter car...but the 4runner rides so much smoother than I'm used to compared to the Supra that handled like it was on rails.

The thought of shipping the 4runner off to have the motor built and a custom turbo setup created for it crossed my mind...but that'll never happen. I'll just buy another Supra in a bit and then tow it with the 4runner :)

That's the plan with my baby Supra...hahah. It'll never be extreme enough to be a trailer queen though. Or maybe I'll be extreme and drive it everywhere.

Mine never was a trailer queen, I daily drove it on pump gas with the boost turned down, and with race fuel and the boost turned up a bit it was a fun car to take to the track and beat all the vettes, vipers and muscle cars with "my little 6 cylinder"...complete with factory leather, custom sound system and all the other "luxury" amenities half those cars don't have anyways. I never was into stripping a car to the bones just to go fast, I want to do it comfortably and in style. However my next one will be more of a race car that I fully intend to run 8's with in the quarter mile (love to break Woon's record and get into the 7's on the 6 speed)...just that that's a couple years away I'm sure.

Good luck with your IS swap...those can be fun but they can be a nightmare too if you don't replace enough of the "little" parts that aren't built to handle the type of power the 2jz-gte motor cranks out! Although is that a gte or just the ge? Hard to tell from the view of that picture...?

Fully agree.

The swap is a full GTE longblock from a JDM Aristo which is equivalent to the JDM supra longblock. I'm not looking for more than 400-450rwhp so that is just within the power capacity of the swapped W58 tranny and the rest of the driveline.

Should be a nice quick low 12 second car with plenty of luxuries in the end.

TeCKis300, That is awesome! Good luck with that swap! The fastest car I ever rode in was a boosted IS300 from a guy named Randy in Miami. Toyomoto performed all the engine work. That car was sick!

I just sold my '94TT 6spd/:( , that thing was an absolute blast. I only had it up to 375whp (which I know is baby hp for 2jz standards, but it felt plenty quick for a weekend only car. Before that, my daily was an Evo w/350awhp. Going from those cars to just my t4r has been quite a change. I've thought several times about boosting this thing, but I just can't do it right now. Oh well, such is the cost of a growing family, gotta prioritize things....I will be back in the land of boost one day.....Good luck w/your project, keep me posted.

I do know that my v8 gets on avg. 6-8 mpg MORE than my friend with a auto v6 trd taco.
I am really pleased with the v8, i could only wish that it made 400 hp :-)

400hp? If you want fun get a 3400lb car that has about 460hp at the rear wheels...which means about 550hp the way the auto manufacturers would rate it (they always base their ratings at the crank, not at the wheels). Especially when it's from turbo's...nothing will feel the same as a turbo all of a sudden hitting full boost (my dyno showed about 120hp increase in less than 300rpm), just SLAMS you back into the seat, rips the rear wheels loose if you don't have good tires and makes your car run away from whatever you're racing.
