I have 2002 V6 SR5 with the 5000# capacity and live in FL. I installed the weight distribution hitch, a brake controller and a transmission cooler so I can tow my 4800# travel trailer. I know I am at my limit for the 4Runner but never thought we would buy a camper.
I took the camper on a 400 mile round trip and had no issues on the way up. Coming back, twice the 4Runner failed me. Each time it failed, I was on an entrance ramp (very mild grade) and in the middle of accellerating at a modest pace when it stopped accellerating forward. The engine speed stayed steady around 2000 -2400 RPM's (no out of control reving), the transmission felt like it disconnected and the brakes and power steering still had power. After pulling over to check the transmission fluid and various other ideas, I started the 4Runner and it ran fine. The same thing happened 3 hrs later when I stopped for gas.
It occurred a third time this weekend, accellerating out from a red light at a modest pace. Two out of three times the engine had only been running for a few miles, so the transmission fluid should not have been over heated.
The 4Runner appears to be balanced on the weight distribution system (Equalizer) as designed. The Toyota dealer checked it out after the first incident and found no computer codes tripped.
Can anyone explain what the issue could be? Could my slow acceleration be the cause? Is there a computer lockout on the powertrain if it is overburdened?
