V6 vs. V8 gas mileage

In my 2003 Limited V8 4WD I get about 16 overall mpg around suburbia. On highway roadtrips around 21. All in all not bad for a lifted moderately heavy truck frame with a full time 4WD and a V8. I'm satisfied.

The reason I bought a V8 is I just love the low end torque, I love the sound a V8 makes and I love the no hassle full-time 4WD (especially for when my wife has the truck with our kids)

To me the timing belt is no big deal and I will change it myself when the time comes.

If an extra MPG gives you warm fuzzies, timing belt maintenance scares you, or you dont want full time 4WD then rock the V6 and wear a smile.

Can I come over with a lawn chair and some beer and, when something goes wrong, make wise-ass comments during your timing belt change? We're all friends, right?

I'm not exactly sure what part of my last post you've taken offense to.... :confused:

My point was one is not 'better' than the other and from what I have seen MPGs are very close all things considered.

For someone like my parents the V6 would be the best choice because they care mostly about the very best mpgs possible and changing a timing belt WOULD scare them because its something they've never had to worry about on any of their previous vehicles.

And yes until someone gives gives a reason not to be... as far as I know we are all friends here.
 
I get 15mpg in my 6 cyl.

I drive combo city/highway/country roads. I have a heavy foot.

Went w/the 6 cyl because it's what I found (private seller), and my dad felt better about the 6 due to no timing belt. If the right truck came up and was an 8 cyl it wouldn't have really mattered. These things seem bulletproof for the most part regardless.

He is just regretting having the V6 so he has to try and make it sound high and mighty! :bigok:
 
V8 owners like talking about how their engine is "smoother" and "doesn't have to work as hard.".... Sounds nice and relaxing... is it true that the Limited V8s also give you a pedicure and a facial, too? Sucks that the Sports do the pedicure, only.
 
I was told from the dealer that the ’03 and up 4runners have a timing chain that never has to be replaced.... is that correct?

The V8's have a timing belt, and the V6's have a chain.

Just had my belt replaced about 3 weeks ago, was about $800 which sucks but I love that V8 so much it's worth it.
 
exactly, 800 over say 7- 8 yrs to hit the mark. So around $100/yr is a deterrent? not for most, neither is 1-2 mpg difference. Maybe if you are extremely frugal
 
Just to start this up again, I have 2006 V8. I'm young and I would rather have the V6 for gas only. I've driven both and the V8 is a lot more fun to drive. That said, before I had my lift and tires I could pull off 16-17 easy. I also went from Atlanta, GA to Pensacola FL (Around 350 miles) on one tank with the fuel light off still. I'm still trying to see what I get with my lift and tires, but so far the ODO says 141 and I have 150ish to go. So with the correction I have already gone 150. So I'll be getting around 15 with lift an tires. Not ideal, but totally worth it since I drive a lifted 4runner with a v8 :)
