V6 vs V8 guidance

For the record there is more than one 4WD system on the 4Runner. My dad's '05 doesn't have the center lock (aka full time 4WD) When you shift in 4WD, the center is locked. No button. Just 2H 4H 4L on the shifter.

There are also two V8's depending on the year. The early ones with 245hp and the later vvti with 270hp which probably makes better mileage than the old one. The V6 makes 240hp. It tows 4000lb trailers just fine. If you never tow, the V6 has plenty of power. I towed a 4000 trailer with my old 4R that had a 3.4l 180hp motor and later supercharged to probably 240hp.

I tow enough that a V8 is what I needed.

I selected the 4 Runner based on the 4.0L 2wd/4wd combination. That was 3 years ago...today with $4 gas I am glad I did. After averaging MPG for 40,000 miles my 4L V6 gets 19.6-20.5 city and 21.8-23.1 hwy depending on how heavy my foot is. So 20mpg was my threshold coming out of a 6.0L GMC at 14.1 mpg.

So on average the V6 saves you about $10 per tank of gas over the V8...if I compare it to my GMC 6L it is a 33% savings in fuel costs which was very dramatic.

Respectfully, i dont see how you're getting those numbers city unless the ''city'' is not truly city/suburban areas.

Do you think they are too low? I live 20 miles from Public Square in Cleveland so I am smack in the middle of the suburbs and all of my driving is on road stop & go since my 4Runner is my daily driver. This truck has never gone below 19 mpg city but won't get over 21 unless you are under 65mph. I drive 100 freeway miles & back to the Lake Erie Islands every weekend in the Summer and I-90 is loaded with State Troopers so I ride on cruise at 65 and my mileage is usually about 21. I think the numbers are pretty good. I do use Q Horsepower Syn oil & clean the fuel system with Redline SI-1 every 20k and install a new Fram Air filter every 20k and clean the MAF and new plugs every 30k as well. I have ditched the HC filter too. So, this truck runs optimal.

I'm guessing your V8 is sucking gas like my last one. The V6 is less power but pays for itself in savings. JMO.

The 4th Gen was the first and most likely will be the last time Toyota put a V8 in the 4Runner. The smooth quiet running of the V8 is now reserved for the luxury equivalent after Toyota realised how many Lexus sales they were losing to 4Runner. The V8 4Runner was imho a secret little bargain that Toyota corrected when they went to the 5th Gen.

You are dreaming.....do you guys lay awake at night making this stuff up....they dumped the V8 in the 4Runner because of fleet CAFE regulations.

No Lexus drivers really look at a 4Runner as an alternate choice. They are looking at Mercedes, Cadillac, Infinity.

Wow. Those are some incredible numbers. Were those calculated by hand?

I'm pretty sure the EPA numbers for an 08 V6 were 16 mpg city and 20 highway.

I don't keep super close tabs on my mpg, its a truck and I'm a big fan of V8 engines in general, the sound, the low end torque... and as V8s go this one is smoooooth.

There are two: the V6 multi-mode and the V8 full-time. That's it.

Yes he does. It is a black button to the left and below the steering wheel, same as all other 4th gens. It is the second switch from the left in this picture:

Yes, strictly by gallons /miles over 3 years. some of the winter gas blends will keep it at 19 hwy in Winter but overall I think ditching the HC filter was the best one thing for mileage increase of about 1 mpg. But my mpg numbers are not the highest on here. Some guys report higher. But one thing you need to remember...the V6 is NOT a torque monster like the V8...so you have no motivation to put your foot in it like you would with a V8. I have driven both and the V6 is a slow pig in comparison. So, there is a huge trade off.

Well those are some pretty amazing MPG numbers. Very impressive. :trophy:

You said you pulled the tea bag out of the intake, any other changes? Also, what kind of tires are you running?

I gotta say, I test drove a 6 and it did feel plenty fast, I just wanted the 8.

That same runner (v6) also read 14.7 mpg on the computer as it hadn't been reset.

Removing the HC filter basically does nothing. I took mine out and zero change.

Maybe the guy let it idle for 10 or 15 minutes. If mine ever got 14 mpg I would get rid of it.

Michelin Latitudes 34psi, all synthetic oil in engine & drivetrain, new air filter every 20k & maf clean. Shell or Marathon 87 only.

Well in that runners defense, it was in the ''South Hills'' of Pittsburgh (start/stop/start/stop...). My wifes car (v6 Pontiac G6) only gets around 17-18 in these conditions, and on the way to/from downtown Pitt only, the G6 only gets like 15-16 (calculated). My v8 runner gets about 13.5 if literally only using it to/from downtown Pitt on the commute for work (calculated).

Yes, the commute is a miserable 12 miles that takes about an hour... Ave speed is usually about 14-15 mph.

But the 4cyl Accord 5spd I traded in got around 23 on the same drive. But I knew what I was getting going in and could not be happier!

Any gain you had was from cleaning the MAF. That does work.

Thx for mentioning the MAF. I've been meaning to do that and clean the battery terminals for some time. Just did both tonight in about 20 min. Threw some grease around the termals as well to keep any future corrosion at bay.

Will drive it Thursday, and can't wait to see if the ECU reset + MAF cleaning does any good!
