V6 vs V8 Limited Runner Question

I have a 2003 Toyota V6 that is going back to Toyota. Looking at a V8 because I love the product and how Toyota handled my problem. How have the V8's been? Any problems? How many have looked at the V6 and took a V8 and if so why?
Thanks in advance

Advantage of V8: 5-speed auto tranny (better for towing & off-roading), & proven engine.

Disadvantage: fuel economy (due to V8 and full-time 4wd system) and 5-speed auto tranny is a new design.

However, Toyota are known to build the most reliable transmission on the planet...so i would not worry too much.

V8 is a sweet, reliable engine. It's been around for several years.
Only gets 1 mpg less than the V6. The full time AWD is more than likely dead reliable-nothing you'll wear out. It's similar to the Audi system with Torsen center diff, and they don't fail.

The oil change on the V6 appears to be much easier than the V8. The 8 will be a bear in that you should lower the skid plate, and the filter is right in line with the sway bar.

I'm finding the adaptive 5 sp auto tranny is interesting as I have been manually downshifting lately when going down hills, and now the tranny is doing it automatically when i don't expect it.

V6 vs V8

Had a problem with the drive belt. The tentioner and belt has been replaced but the belt is still whinning when first statred and when driving at times.

I don't see how having the v8's fulltime 4wd would be a big disadvantage

I only state this because it's the same system found in the LC's which as been around for awhile now :)

I think the only sacrifice is the mpg difference between the v8 and the v6.

ehe but what do it know!

btw wreck111, I read that a member in CA has found a solution with their local stealer on the belt fix. http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12647
Hopefully you can get in contact with that member to find out what they did to fix the belt issue.

Good luck

I just wonder how much of a difference there would be in gas mileage if the v8 were 4wd not awd. I would just like to have that control to choose whether its in 4wd or 2wd. Besides maybe you could do some burnouts if you were able to just put it in 2wd. Now that could be fun.:D

To clarify, the v8 4runner comes fulltime 4wd and not awd. As for mpg difference, I'd say you're looking at prob 1mpg or less.

Personally speaking, fulltime works fine with me :) ensures that the front axles are moving on a regular basis. If you don't use your 4wd often, you'll experience problems eventually so having it continually moving works for me! Less headaches.... Also less to worry about when i'm offroading anyway. I already know it's in 4wd, all I have to focus on is whether to be in low or now! :D

4 Lo

Goodtimes: Today I engeaged 4Lo locked center diff for the first time (1400miles) and the dadgum buzzer sounded and 4Lo light flashed. I was stopped, tranny in neutral, drove backwards, forwards, engine off-back on,I couldn't get the system to engage. Finally after driving awhile in 4Lo locked, it was almost impossible to get it unengaged. Did you have this must trouble the first time you used your 4Lo?

Sac State:

Nope didn't have any problems what so ever. Bummer to hear that you had some problems.

I've engaged 4lo by stopping first and then putting the tranny in neutral. Then switched to 4lo :) It takes about 5 sec or so for it to engage into low (if you have your window down, u'll actually hear it!). 4lo flashing means that it's not in 4lo. if it's buzzing it's prob the trac/vsc or the hac thingie. Also make sure you go into 4lo before you realize it's too late! i.e. don't try switching to 4lo after the fact that you realize that you're in trouble. better to be prepared.

Unlocking 4lo is pretty much the same. neutral and then switch to 4hi :).

If you still encounter problems w/ your 4lo you might want to take it into the dealer but if it problem doesn't come back don't worry about it :D

The only problem I had was every once in awhile, locking the damn center was a pain! I don't like the vsc to engage so whenever I have a chance, I usually lock the center (the terrain I play in lets me so I don't have to worry about any damages to the diff). Anyway, I usually have to try a few times before it locks the center every once in awhile...

Other than that, everything works like a charm! gotta love it!!!

Thanks, I'll try it again. I found that you have to unlock the center dif before it will disengage 4Lo. I could hear the locker moving out/clicking out, of position down below. What was irritating was the freekin buzzer! It was worse than the horse fly's. I did hear a thump when I engaged 4Lo for the first time, maybe it was the gears aligning for the first time. Or the undercoating spray Toyota applies to ship the vehicle. I posted pics of my Borla on yotatech.com, check them out.

Toyota might say it's "fulltime 4wd", but it is AWD. I like AWD. Some people act like AWD is a bad thing

The best wording is: full-time AWD, with full-time 4wd capability (when in 4-LO).

Why full-time AWD...because you always have power to front and rear axle ALL THE TIME, but you also get the shifting of power to either axle depending on traction.

That's my definition of it....:light: :gaptooth:

Actually toyota's wording of "fulltime 4wd" is correct.

AWD: vehicle in 4hi (power to 4 wheels) but without the option of low. Subaru, Audi and a few others come to mind. (Gearing option: 4hi only)

4WD is actually broken up into 2 categories: Part-Time and Full-Time.

Part- Time 4wd: Vehicle is in 2hi (2 wheel drive) until you put it into 4wd. Has option of 4Lo. Found in most 4wd vehicles. (Gearing Option: 2Hi,4Hi,4Lo - and some I think have 2Lo(? not sure) )

Full-Time 4wd: Vehicles in 4hi all the time. Comes with option of 4lo. (found in all range rovers and most landcruisers.) (Gearing Option: 4Hi,4Lo)

So let's not get mixed up in these options.

For more info on this, check out your local landrover dealership and they'll tell ya all about the various 4wd systems out there :) They even have free books they hand out so you can learn all about the different types of 4wd applications, designs etc etc. GOod stuff!

only 4x4 V8's??? NOT TRUE!

I have a 4X2 V8, it seems like that's all they send down here to Houston, not much inclement weather to justify it, I wanted a 4X4 since the Torsen diff is so damn reliable. . .at any rate, my point is that you CAN find a 4X2 V8 if you're worried about mileage, but to tell you the truth, around the city driving, I get like 16-17mpg, and I've never taken her on a highway trip to calculate the highway mileage. . .(she's only got 4K on her right now). . .
