V6 vs V8 which is better??

Hi,

I understand that the V8s and their drive trains in the 4R are actually from the Lexus SUVs. Where does the V6 and its drivetrain originate from. Does being from the Lexus family make it a better more reliable drive train.

I know each has it's pros and cons, V8 smoother more torque etc, V6s a litlle more noisie but better milage, not as much torque.

But how about the reliablity factor of the V8 being a lexus vs the V6 which is probably from the toyota family, which I'm not saying is bad.

The reason I ask is there are alot more V6s to choose from than V8 around this city at the moment(03s and 2004s).

Hi,

Yeah sorry about that, you're right I should have just searched alittle harder. I tryed V6 vs v8 and came up with nothing, then I started a new thread then I tryed V6s vs V8s and came up with a chit load of threads. Although nobody really addresses the lexus vs toyota reliablity question, everyone just belives it's still a toyota and that's good enough.

You can read articles till you drop. But go test drive and try out all the models.

What you think you need may not be what others need.

You can debate V6 and V8 reliability to death. But my other Toyota pickup with 4 cylinders has lasted 180K miles and still going strong.
 
The V6 is a new, all-aluminum, engine, introduced in 2003, so has no real track record. It could well have been based on a previous engine in some way, though. The V8 has been around quite a while in various iterations (in both Toyota trucks and Lexi), and now has the same variable timing technology as the V6.

As to which you need, the thread linked to above has all that info. I have the V6, which is a great engine that only shows its weakness on long freeway inclines when the tranny has to downshift to maintain speed. It sounds kinda crappy and tinny tho... the V8 sound is definitely preferable!
 
The V6 is the first in Toyota's GR family of engines. It's Toyota's very first aluminum truck engine. It has a timing chain and VVT-i. Later iterations of this engine 2GR, 3GR and 4GR have dual VVT-i and the 2GR in the IS350, 3GR and 4GR have direct injection.

The V8 is a 2UZ, with the 1UZ from 400 model Lexus cars and 3UZ from 430 models. The UZ is a proven powerplant. There have been quite a few 1UZ and 2UZ that have half a million miles without any major engine work.

2003-04 V8 4Runners don't have VVT-i, 05+ do. 2003-04 V6 4Runners have 4 speed transmissions, 05+ have 5 speeds.

You do realize that the "Lexus" family and the "Toyota" family are the same thing, right? In other words, every Lexus vehicle has a Toyota engine. Toyota is the company that produces Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

Yes I am aware that they are the same company, but considering that Lexus is the upper end of the companys lineup I kinda figured maybe they'd be built a little better than the toyota branded vehicles. I just read that the 4R's V8 drive train also gets put in the Land Cruiser as well so I guess that blows that theory.

Lexus and Toyota share engines. The only engines that Toyota will not see (for now): car V8 engine (4.3L V8), high-end hybrids (GS450H, LS600H), and IS250/350 engine.

Toyota IS Lexus and vice versa!!!

It's not like Lexus is a different company, they are simply the luxury division of Toyota.

It's the same thing with Nissan and Infiniti. Or Honda and Acura.
 
True enough, but not all Acura engines make it into Hondas and when they do it's years down the road and the same with Nissan/Infinity.

Oh my God!! Okay, listen carefully....

One day a long time ago, a company called Toyota was born. They started out in Japan and sold mostly economy cars. They became more popular in the United States in the early 70's because of the gas crunch. As they slowly became a legitimate supplier to the American marketplace, their popularity grew. Their following increased because of their above average reliability.

Then one day Toyota decided to create a "luxury" division. They called it Lexus (by the way, Lexus does not exist in Japan. What we know as a Lexus vehicle is a Toyota in Japan). The reason for the creation of the luxury division was to compete with other luxury vehicles, such as long timers BMW, Mercedes, and even the other new Japanese luxury divisions, Infiniti and Acura.

Are you starting to get the picture? The engine in any Lexus vehicle is a Toyota engine. Lexus is nothing more than a name for a "luxurious" Toyota.

If you don't see the light soon, I'll just give up on ya:bash:

And not all Toyota engines make it to Lexus...like my 1.8L Inline-4 engine in Corolla!:D
 
Ah come on don't be a quiter, no one likes a quiter.

As a matter of fact the reason why they don't sell Leus in JA Pan is because no one there wants to drive a status symbol made in there own country, thus the reason they never sold them locally. Everyone there prefers BMW or Mercedes, but the lastest news I heard was Toyota was introducing the Lexus brand in Japan this year to gain market share from BMW and Mercedes. I guess its no different than Chevy and Caddies right.
 
i'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet. V8 comes with full-time 4WD transmission, while V6 comes with part-time AND full-time 4WD transmission.

for just about any cars between V6 and V8, i'd naturally go with V8. But in the case of T4R, V6 tranny is much more fun and useful. so in the end, i went with V6 T4R.

but if they release V8 with multi-selector transmission(part-time AND full-time 4WD), i'm ready to dump my current T4R anyday!

This is partially true I believe. Isn't the G/FX35 engine exactly the same as the 350Z and the Titan/Armada the same as the QX56? I think the Maxima and Altima has different versions of the G/FX35 and 350Z engine.

Also, Lexus is launched as a global brand world wide. So the Lexus nameplate is sold in Japan and Europe where it was previously known as Toyota.

You're talking about a transfer case not a transmission. :D
