v8 4Runners - What was last year built?

I'm shopping for my first 4Runnner and would like a v8. The dealer and the web site does not list any....so I'm assuming they aren't made any longer? If so what is the last production year?

The Last year was '09, the V8 was not available on the 5th generation 4Runners.

If you want the V8 on a new 4runner, the closest you are going to get is the Lexus GX, same frame and drivetrain but with the bigger engine. As stated above, '09 was the last year the V8 was offered in the 4runner but 09 V8's are pretty rare, only a few were sold.

Anyone know the towing capacity of the V8? I'm looking to pull around 4k to 4.5k with ease and plenty of power to spare.

My current vehicle is an Explorer AWD 5.0 rated at 6k. After towing quite a bit I realize now that the ratings seem to be overblown significantly on paper. I experience underpowered towing up hills and speed limitation on flat roads. I now have decided that my next vehicle will be a Toyota, but I'm wondering if indeed the tow ratings are over-blown on Toyotas too. I'm sort of fixed on a 4Runner but need a vehicle that can manage 4.5k easily. Can the V8s do this and what about the 6 cylinder newer and older 4Runners?

My v8 runner tows the boat in the picture below with no ease. 4500lbs dry plus the trailer.

Did I read correctly..."with no ease"? As in the vehicle struggles a bit with the load?

Any idea what the new V6 4Runners can do....they too are 4.7? Are they lacking significant towing power as a result of the 2 less cylinders?

New 4Runner is rated at the save 5,000 lbs, but only a V6 is offered. No V8. My 2003 SR5 V8 has towed 5k and no problems, if you wanted a new Toyota with a V8, its Tundra, Sequoia, land cruiser, or some of the Lexus models.

I know the 4th gen v8's come with a OEM transmission cooler, the v6's don't. Not sure on the 5th gen. Not a huge deal to add an aftermarket one, but nice to have it stock.

Also, I haven't seen anyone mention mpg's. I occasionally tow light loads, I'd guess approx 2000-2500 pounds. Even with this on relatively flat highway I easily loose 2-3 mpg. Towing 4500 pounds I think it'd be possible you're looking at low teens and possibly single digit mpg's. Depending on how often you tow, this could be a major factor to consider.

If you are going to tow a lot then the 4Runner may not be your preferred rig.

I have the same 4.7 V8 in two vehicles; a Tundra and the 4Runnner. The Tundra has a much longer wheelbase and towing seems to be a non issue for it. The 4Runner seems to work a little harder but more importantly, there are times at higher speeds when the tail can start wagging the dog; a very uncomfortable feeling. I've towed a flat bed trailer with a tractor on it, a dump trailer loaded with lumber and a horse trailer with two horses loaded with the 4Runner (not all at once mind you); The most comfortable towing trailer is the smaller dump trailer. The Tundra doesn't seem to care what you hook up to it, it just goes; you never know its back there as far as handling goes.

Mileage with highest loads was down to 12 ~ 14 mpg

I tow a 5k lb 23' Airstream Safari trailer with my 2008 V8 4WD 4Runner and typically average 12 mpg.

Here's what I've learned after towing my AS trailer well over 5k miles the past 3 years. 1) Use an anti-sway, WD hitch such as a Hensley or a Propride 3P or something similar. I use a ProPride 3P. 3) Set up the weight distribution hitch carefully so that the additional hitch weight is transferred from the T4R's rear axle to the T4R front axle and the trailer axles. Use a CAT scale or similar facility to determine the amount of WDH necessary. 4) Don't drive fast when towing. On the interstate I keep it at 60-65 max. 5) I wouldn't use the T4R to pull my AS trailer through the Rocky Mountains. I'd buy a Tundra 5.7L or an F250 diesel. 6) Use a good quality brake controller.

You can tow that and still have a lot of power to spare. I believe the capacity for the V8 is 7200 lbs, don't quote me on that.
