V8 4x4 - Is Multi-Mode 2WD Possible?

I was just wondering if it's possible to add the 2wd functionality of the V6 to the V8? I would love to have the 2WD option on my V8 for increased gas mileage and it would be fun for playing in the snow and dirt sometimes.

I'm wondering if it's more or less a computer/electrical thing or if the transfer case is mechanically different than the V6. And if it's fundamentally different, is there anyway of perhaps switching some drivetrain parts form a V6 into the V8? For all I know the V6 has a smaller everything for the smaller engine but I have a suspicion that the axles and differentials and transfer case are nearly identical between the models.

Well I wasn't interested ONLY for gas mileage, I also think it would be cool to see what type of terrain my 4Runner can handle in 2WD. Whenever I go with my friend in his Tacoma he does as much as he can until he NEEDS 4WD and then he's got the rear locker too just in case. Also, I think it would be fun to be able to play in the snow with only the rear wheels being powered.

Does anyone know more technical differences between the V6 and V8 transfer cases?

The difference between transfer cases is slight -- V6 is designated VF4AM, VF4BM in the V8 -- but I doubt you could modify. Probably the case would have to be switched out. Also, an automatic disconnecting differential system would have to be installed for the front diff like in the V6. Then you'd have to get it all to work.

Switching vehicles would be cheaper and easier.
