V8 4x4 vs 4x2 MPG

Hey guys,

What kind of gas mileage are you guys getting out of your v8 4x2 and 4x4? I currently have both and getting the following below. I suspect the full time 4hi is contributing to this as well but was wondering if what i'm observing is within the ball park. Both is subject to the same type of driving during my commute which is 50/50 streets and freeway traffic

- 4x2: all stock getting 18 mpg
- 4x4: 2/1" lift, 265/70 AT tires and 245K miles getting 14 mpg

I consistently get 18 highway and around 15 city. That's with calculating the 7.5% difference in tire size. Mods are in my signature.

When I was stock, I was getting 19-21mpg...you're comparing apples to watermelons right now...

Tires eat up about 1 mpg
Lift eats up about 2 mpg
Age and drivetrain might net a loss of another 2 mpg...

To me, it seems you're doing very well...I get 14-15 mpg no matter how it's driven, city, highway, trails...always consistent at 14.5 mpg....couldn't be happier with a v* AWD 4 runner that can be driven anywhere...

I get 17 mpg with 255/75/17 KO2 C-rated tires (32" diameter) and a 2.5/1.5 inch lift. I disagree that lift and tires need to drop you to 14 mpg, and age only affects mpg if the vehicle is no longer running up to snuff. Lt tires need to be aired up to 38-40 psi to give you the same mileage as P-rated tires at 32 psi. The stiffer side walls generate more heat (i.e., wasted power) at lower pressures.

I'd replace plugs if they're old, and check compression while you have them out. Also, make sure you are accounting for odometer error if you have oversized tires.

Girlfriend gets 14mpg pretty consistently. 33 mud terrains, 2" lift, roof rack. 2003 V8 4x4 with 280k on it at 6000ft elevation.

Just got back from New Orleans, averaged a little over 22 mpg highway with my V8 4x2.

I’m getting 21.5 on the comp, typically about 2 mpg less actual calculated. But I’m doing mostly 50-60mph.
2004 v8 4x4 with ko2. At 6000’.

Lucky to get 16-17 mpg on the highway with mine. Honestly the biggest hit i would say was adding the prinsu rack.

Just using the dash reading; although the few times I've manually calculated it in the past, it was spot on. Had a little bit of tailwind, nothing major, I am running Yokohama street tires so that helps.

Well I must say if your read out on the dash matches your MPG when you manually calculate it you have a very rare T4R, almost all if not all report the readout to be over by 2 or so MPG, I know mine is over by around 2 1/2 MPG every time I fill up, I calculate my MPG at every fill up manually.

I have a 2wd that I'm in the process of converting to 2WD/4WD. I have all of the ADD front end installed & am pleased that I no measurable loss in MPG.
I've put over 1000 miles on it since the front end installation.
