V8 conv. on my '92 SR5 4x4

baitrunner

New member
I recently aquired a 92 4runner with a blown V6 motor. I'm contemplating on putting in a Chevy 350 with the use of an adapter through Advanced Adapter. The 4runner has a manual trans. I plan on lifting it and running 33" tires. I may make this my daily driver. Anyone have any suggestions. Thanks.

How are you with the wrench?

It's a pretty big job from what I'm finding out. I'm also planning on ditching my 22re in my truck after the first of the year so I've been doing some research.

Are you using a donor vehicle or getting a new v8?

Have you made plans to upgrade the fuel pump and radiator?

What are you going to do for accessories?

I think Northwest Offroad makes adapters to use the Toyota power steering and AC compressor you may want to look into them too... I have also heard of people using the Chevy parts off the donor engine and just working them into the Toyota systems.

I watched an episode of Trucks a few weeks ago and they did a V8 swap into an s10 and I learned a few tricks...

They had a 4.3 v6 in the truck and swapped in a crate 350 V8. All of the accessories including brackets and serpentine belt from the 4.3 motor bolted right on to the V8. I was thinking of finding a wrecked/blown 4x4 S10 with that motor for cheap and scavenging it for parts.

They also used the 700r transmission out of it too and said it would hold the power.

There is a Chevy long block crate motor that makes 290hp/330lbs that is around $1600 for a brand new engine. Not remanufactured. All you do is add an intake, carb, distributor and the accessories on the front of the motor and you're in business.

If your's is a 4x4 model, you can use the Chevy transmission too if you want to. There are adapters that will mate either a 2wd or 4wd TH350 or 700r to the stock Toyota transfer case. The speed sensor and the 4wd dash indicator switch are both on the transfer case so they will both still work.

Or, if you're a 2wd you can still use the Chevy auto and save some money on the adapters. You'll just need a custom drive shaft. This would be the easiest way for sure...

That's just a little of what I've seen poking around...

I'm in Ocala, man its tempting to ride up there and be a fly on the wall when you do it to get some insight on what to expect. You doing it soon?

I could always just drop the wife off at her parents house for the day... :biggrin2:

There's lot's of info on this job over at Pirate 4x4. Just don't ask stupid questions over there or you'll get banned... No shit.

It's easier and better to use the GM PS, AC, alt, etc. that are alreday bolted onto the engine than use the cheap adapter brackets.

You'll also need a 2-3" BL and have to beef up the front suspension to handle the weight.

Should consider a Lexus 1UZ-FE V8 conversion too.....a lot lighter and modern motor (still toyota too) and bellhousing kits are available (from Oz) to mount it up to the std, 5 speed which is more than capable of handling the extra power.

Once installed they look like they came from the factory that way.

Hey twisty, I've seen (and drooled over ) your truck in your conversion thread over at Yotatech...

You have just about the baddest 4runner I have ever seen.

And I still say it looks better with the 37" tires than it did with the 39's.
:p

You should post a link to your build up thread.

I'm gonna go watch that video again. Believe it or not, it is still on my desktop. :awais:

I guess they sure looked like 39's...

I knew they were 2" different anyway. They were just a little much.

Did you run them for the trip anyway?

Or, if you want to spend more and get more, just look at the homepage.

They have 700hp 572's as well if you want to drop $13.4k. :awais:

Being a chevy guy if I was going to put a V8 in anything, the least I would get would be the 330HP crate 350. it has vortec heads and the one piece oil pan and crank seal and roller cam option, WAY less prone to leaks and problems and way more power. the other option and a lot cheaper is get a vortec motor right out of a 96 and later truck.

Looking for the trans adapter and wiring harness. Do you know if the companies are still in business?

Wow, grave dig. Yeah mate, both businesses in Oz are still making bellhousings to suit the 1uzfe to the 4runner gearboxes.

These two company's do them.

Checked out your link on yotatech, but the pics don't work...

What did you end up doing for the wiring? Splice the two harnesses together? Were you able to keep A/C or cruise control?

Also how did you fit the 1uz with the factory IFS? Cause I thought the oil pan would not clear at all? There is a guy on yotatech (RMA) and he put a 1uz in a first gen 4runner and frankensteined an oil pan to fit with IFS.. haha

Thanks!

I'd like to see more also! The links on the other forum are dead, I'm still trying to make a decision on my swap.
