V8 conversion

The V8 makes 315 lb/ft which is very smooth, Lexus type power. I am not knocking on the supercharger but this is power made on regular unleaded.

If i find a supercharger for the 2UZ at a good price, I wouldn't turn it down.:hungry:

This is where I am looking to compare apples to apples. You just pulled the wikipedia pages stats which are, I believe, at the crank.

I am curious to see how much power to the ground a stock 2UZ is putting out... Keep in mind that my dyno read outs are for the 4 speed slush box that not everyone prefers. Heck, if I was running the 5 speed and my exact same set up I bet there would additional 5-15 wtq to be found (not to mention removing the second cat to add a couple HP). Both engines make their power in the same spot though - 3800rpm for the 2UZ and 3600 RPM for the 5VZ for peak torque values.


And yes, of course you're running regular while I run 94 octane.
 
Here a question the two of you may be able to answer. I noticed while doing research a couple years back that the HP #'s vary by year. According to wiki, her 05 has the most at 282 hp. I assume it's a ECU tune type of thing, because the same thing happened on the 5th gen 4Runner. It's the same 4.0 but 270 vs the 230-240 it came with in the 4th gen. Meanwhile the Tacoma never got the boost at all.

That being said it is on my wish list for a 2UZ from the 05 w 5spd auto.......

I do not have access to a chassis dyno but there are plenty tundra guys who have.

From what i can tell, it has more emissions equipment then the earlier years.

Understood. I guess the difference is that my engine has headers, smaller supercharger pulley and the 7th injector. If we go with the face values of each engine the following shakes out:

2UZ
- 271 hp - 15% drivetrain loss = 230.5 hp
- 315 lbs*ft - 15% drivetrain loss = 267.75 lbs*ft

5VZ
- 190 hp - 15% drivetrain loss = 161 hp
- 220 lbs*ft - 15% drivetrain loss = 187 lbs*ft

5VZ with Supercharger, Headers, URD 7th Injector, 2.1" SC Pulley
- 231 Wheel hp + 15% drivetrain loss = 271 hp
- 270 Wheel lbs*ft + 15% drivetrain loss = 317 lbs*ft

I just googled 'drivetrain power loss Toyota' and ran with the 15% it came up with. Amusing as the math worked out to be EXACTLY the same as the V8.

Now that we have that out of the way, what is the dollar's being spent to complete the V8 swap? How do those apples stack up? Maybe we should steer everyone away from SC's and towards Singtoe for V8 swaps!!

Making the motor mount. Here is a peice of 9" x 4" that is 1/2" thick.

Welding the tundra mount onto the 4runner Crossmember. This gives me the 4"s of set back that I need for the swap.

My V8 swap made me money. I sold my motor, tranny and the donor vehicle parts and i was in the the Black on my conversion.

Never the less. I have raced a supercharged 4runner (forum member DOUS)with TRD headers, smaller supercharger pulley and the 7th injector running 4:30's and I had better take off and we were neck and neck at the end of 1/2 mile. Now my 2UZ-FE does not have the VVTI so it is making even less power the swap I am doing now.

So to sum it up, if had a choice of spending +$4000 on a supercharger, small pulleys, headers, 7th injector, custom tuning or spend nothing and get a V8, my money id on the swap.

Now back to to new swap...

Yeah. Your Taco also kept up with Dous. On 37s. With stock gearing, and a bored 3.4. Still don't know how you pulled that one off....
 
Started working on the exhaust. I was going to take the chassis to the muffler shop and have them graft a system on for me but the Muffler man was out on rehab so that left me SOL. I jusyt went a head and grafted a system using tundra and 4runner parts.

Here goes:

This is the Tundra Y pipe (T pipe).



I cut it up



This is the drivers side cat exit pipe. I trimmed it down.



Tacking it up into place.





Snaking it around the gas tank and transfer case.



Wrapped it with some header wrap to protect the gas tank and transfer case.




All mounted up.

Not to be the 4runner hater but i would keep the Tundra the way it is. The Tundra is worth 3 times more then the 4runner.

Get a new front bumper and some center caps and roll with it...

Yes, I used the the tundra front drive shaft as it is the correct length.

Remember - earlier on in this thread, the V8 tranny is 2" thicker in the torque converter area and I pushed the motor back 2" for the radiator clearance.

Get a new front bumper and some center caps and roll with it...

The Tundra is toast - would need a new front end (pads and rotors at the minimum - probably a new steering rack, OTR and ITR) along with having broken suspension (broken leaf) and rear axle seal gone. That and the interior and exterior are pretty trashed - it was a work truck and shows every one of its 314,xxx KM's.

Besides, anyone can go out and get a V8 tundra...But a V8 4Runner...That's something you don't see everyday...Plus, I really like the 3rd gen 4runner's design and function, add the V8 and I'm in love...Honestly wouldn't want any other truck...

I'll be following this thread for sure, Singtoe has added so much info to it I can't ignore it as a resource. That being said, I'll stop cluttering up his thread with my build. I'll make a thread called V8 Conversion (Canadian Made) and start documenting the build separately.

This is great, I can't wait for V8Runner to roll down the road!

Did the timing belt and water pump today. Check out how I hold the crankshaft from turning to remove its bolt.

BTW Bodies should be removed for doing timing belts from this point forward...

Start



Using a chain to hold the harmonic balancer and remove the bolt.

Check number 1 cylinder for TDC

James - you need new spark plugs...



Pulling it off.



Removed



VVTI Baby




Removed alternator and power steering pump to get clearance.




Covers off



Waterpump off



New water pump and TB



Covers and serpentine belt back on.



Evap and fuel pump next and then the body comes back on...
 
That looks awesome...I'm sure you already did this but I gotta ask anyway.
after installing the belt, Did you rotate the engine one revolution and recheck the timing marks? Heard of lots of guys missing a tooth by not doing it this way. Honestly, I feel stupid for even asking as I know you'll get it right...Just trying to help...
