V8 conversion

Fan-freakin-awesome.

Keep the pictures / detail coming - this is all very helpful for my swap as I'll be doing water pump and timing belt as well.
 
To beat the horse dead, that is one clean engine. No residual coolant rust.

My brother had a friend whose 2002 Tundra with the 2uz died a short death after his tensioner failed at 234k. The dealer never changed it out the first time nor did he and his friend at 200k. Much easier to get to than the 5vz.

You have to update what is in the tool box after the build is finished.

Caesar thanks man, after the swap I'll be wrapping things up ahead off three week expo I'm planning in the summer. I'll have to do a better job of updating my build thread. The hard stuff will be complete with the swap and Rob's been on top of things keeping me in the loop and exceeding my expectations . Lots of local area guys are pitching in to help me out on some other projects including dual batteries, welding, etc once the swap is complete so that will definitely speed things up.
 
Mounted the Evap Box

Since james has the surf tire carrier and he is running dual exhaust, this was the only place the Evap box can fit.

On mine, I mounted right behind the drivers coil spring area. This is where they put it on 2001-02 4runners.





Can anyone say "What Tundra?"

 
I don't know if it was mentioned but is it possible to utilize the stock 4Runner transfer case and bolt that up to the UZ transmission? Or maybe just swap the bellhousings and use the complete 4Runner transfer case and trans?

The newer Tundra have a 6 speed auto and the tail shaft is larger. The transfer case will not bolt up. I tried.

James 4runner will be the first 3rd gen with push button 4x4, low and 1st gear...

It's the 07+ Tundras that have the 6 speed auto. The trans you're playing with from the '06 is a 5 speed auto I believe.

The '03 trans appears to be a 4 speed variant - the PRND2L is the same set up on the '01 4Runner as the '03 Tundra.

I'm glad you're pioneering the swap - make sure to post pictures of the transmission wiring if you could.
 
I'd like to avoid a push button transfer case. What are the options for using a VVTi UZ with a manual transfer case while avoiding a wiring nightmare? Thanks for the info!
 
The best bet would be a transfer case from a lexus lx or gx. one of them ad a semi manual transfer case and would bolt up to the tundra's 6 speed.
 
I looked into it, the UZ GX, LX and Landcruiser had a semi-manual case. Wiring would be a challenge.

I'd just prefer to keep my stock 4Runner multi-mode case for many reasons. There must be a hybrid-rebuild you can do to get this done.

Just curious, are you going to use a 2wd shifter console, or are you attempting a column shifter? or something custom?

You may be able to swap the front end of the tundra trans (bell, input, planetary, valve body, solenoids, electronics.) over to the 4runnner trans and transfer case.

I honestly think your best option would be to order a custom crawl box to adapt from the new tranny to the runner transfer case. It would probably be unnecessary in use more or less, but you would have the capability to then use the runner case and a nice low low gear.

Either a block off late that covers the the hole where the transfer case shifter was or use the 2wd shifter and trim plate.

Column shift would be possible but not practical or pleasing to the eye.

Transmissions are totally different. Can't do it but if AWD is a must, getting 2006 or newer transfer case out of a lexus or sequioa would be an option.

Looking forward to seeing how you tackle this.

Are you grafting the Tundra 4WD buttons somewhere? Maybe cut out the Tundra trim buttons and blend them into the 4Runner console with some fiberglass?

Looking forward to seeing that. I agree the column shift would be :barf: for sure in a third gen. I was just curious as to what your thoughts were.
