V8 conversion

Worked on breaking down the Sequoia Today.

Good news for me: I disconnected the Vtrac and VSC ECM's and ran the truck for a little bit. No chk engine lights. But the Vtrac ,parking brake, VSC and ABS lights where blinking.

The check engine basically only applies to componets that affect emission on the engine for toyota such as evap, o2, maf, misfires, TPS, etc. Brake and trac control systems have their own lights as you have already found out.

Just make sure the vehicle speed still makes it to the engine and trans ecu without the traction control ecu in place. Otherwise you could have trans problems.

You might have to use the 340f from the sequoia cause if I remember correctly, the kickdown was eliminate from the 340f connected to the 2uz. The other reason why I would want to use the 340f from the sequoia is, I think it may have been built a little stronger. You hear that the VB has to be upgrade when throwing a SC on a 3rd gen but you dont hear of tundras and sequouias having any trans issues.

It will probably be alot easier to use the tcase from the 3rd gen. Question is will it bolt up to the 340f from the sequoia. I think it would but you never know. Whats nice about the 3rd gen 4wd is that its basically a stand alone system. It uses input from the ecu but that can be bypassed easily.

I have 99 EWDs from when I did a 3.4 swap into my 1st gen. They actually came to be very useful for when I actually bought a 99 3rd gen. The wiring shouldnt be too much different for the sequoia.

Is it possible to scan some pages from the 99 EWD. The only ones I could find are 2002 (which has vtrac and vsc)

I need the engine ecm, ABS, trans, Cruise control, combination meter and 4wd

I would appreciate that.

Thanks for the heads up. I looked over the wire diagrams for the Sequoia and it shows that the transmission has its own speed sensor and it supplies a signal to the combination meter.

I will test it tomorrow by taking it for a test drive and seeing if the speedometer registers any speed.

As far as leaving out some of the Sequoia systems, You will most likely have issues. All of those systems "talk" to each other and have to continue to communicate to not have check engine lights, and to function properly.

The other thing that comes to mind is the legality of the swap. Probably not a problem where you are locally, but since you are looking to sell this one (if i read that right i just skimmed the earlier posts) Then the pain in the ass states like CA here you will need everything to work just like the donor vehicle did. Oh and if they ask the engine came from an 02 legally it would need to be the same year or newer as the vehicle it went in to.

You cant do this swap without getting the EWDs from this site.

Also you can leave out the other sequoia systems without having issues such as the vsc and trac control. Now if you had an either an 04 or 06 ( i cant remember when drive by wire came to play) and new model, then you would have issues. This is when the speed sensors were put in at each wheel and the vvti and drive by wire creates havoc for engine swaps. Hense the reason why dont see anyone using the 1gre

I have the EWDs from the site from my 3.4 swap and can email them to you. However you will need them for the sequoia as well, so you should be able to download everything you need. Either way, if you want, PM me your email and ill send them.

The wiring for this swap might be a little time consuming but it should be easy and fairly straight forward. Im really interested in the rear disk brale bolt on upgrade that you think is possible.

IMO, just get the sequioa pdfs from TIS. They are cheap, you will get alot more info, and its ALOT easier to read which greatly reduces the chance of a mistake.

You definately have a head start by having the sequoia body harness. It makes like that much easier.

After reading and comparing the two, The 4runner has an ECT switch while the Sequoia doesn't.

The 4runner has a separate ecu and actuator for the cruise control but the Sequoia doesn't.

They use the same transmission but the 4runner has three electric solenoids in it and the Sequoia has four.



I should be able to re-pin my ecm plug for a true no cut plug and play installation.

I had a friend in SC who had a yearly subscription to TIS; he had his own business and wrote it off on his taxes plus his family owned nine Toyotas. Truly a plethora of information if you want to throw down that much green.

Pretty impressive, I really never knew how much wire was involved in the Sequoia. I guess the 4runner is not too different.

Removing all those items seems to be quite the daunting task.

How long has the Sequoia been sitting, given the rust around the shifter?

The sequoia has been sitting since the beginning of this Thread. The part around the transfer case shifter is un-coated steel. Wasn't rusty a month ago.

I will take more pictures in the AM.

I have the wiring figured out in my head and should be cake to do.

The only thoughts that keep running through my head is the cooling system. I might have to move the engine and trans closer to the firewall (no cross over exhaust like the 3.4). Or go with 2 pusher fans on the front of the condenser. Decisions decisions decisions.

I still have not touched the 4runner yet, still have to clean my garage area up.

I almost have the second Sequoia front apron installed and ready to put back together.

The funney thing is as I do my research into the conversion, it seams that it is common practice to put V8 into Hilux and Surfs in Australia. Everybody and their brother is doing it but the are spending crazy money to do it. I found a online store that sells the conversion parts.

I am amazed that almost every engine in every junkyard I see has an orange kiss of death on it. Even most auction cars with 100,000 miles +, running or not, are sporting them too. I guess most oil changers visit Wallyword for their oil supplies.
