My pops fell in love with the Sequoia so he asked to buy it. I will let him have it for the cost of of the two Sequoias. $3600 plus one windshield and incidentals.

So I get my V8 conversion for free minus incidentals (electric fans, custom exhaust)

Can't wait to see this finished. Even though the 5VZ isn't underpowered, I wish that Toyota put in the 2UZ in the 3rd gen from factory, it would poop on a 5.9 ZJ. Multimode and rear locker makes it even more awesome.

V8 is very popular over in Australia. However I'm not a big fan of the 1uz for off road use. Even though it's a light motor it's just doesn't have the low end torque like the 2uz. I have thought about doing a 2nd swap in my DD. The only thing that is stopping me is the unknown of getting the cruise and A/C to work. Ultimately, I think the 1gre would be a bad ass motor for the 3rd gen but just way to electrical is way to much of a pain.

Cruise is easy only because the ECM controls it. Just have to hook the cruise stalk to the ECM. AC System doesn't get touched other then grafting hoses together and supplying the ECM with AC on signal.

I like the 2uz because it is what i have. If it didn't fall in my lap, i wouldn't be doing the conversion.

1gre is a nice motor too. VVTI really gets all the power that the 4 liters will pump out but you have to spin the engine to get all of its power.

The 2uz does pump out 315 ft/lbs of torque at the lower rpms. My driving style and habits, i seldom race the engine near red line, so I low revving V8 is more for me.
 
It might be "free" plus incidentals...but your TIME is worth how much? :confused:

Impressive man. I just can't imagine ever having the time to do this. Good on ya! Don't neglect the kids! :wink2:

I like to think time spent improving or servicing the rig same way as time spent offroading it. It is just as fun, its part of the deal. You can't think of it in terms of man-hour dollars unless you are leaving your primary-income work alone to do it.

My thoughts exactly.

This is fun for me. Now if it was my day job, I am pretty sure that it would be tedious.

So tinkering is a hobby for me, thus the reason why it is taking so long.

The 4runners radiator is 26" by 25". It is quite big. I have been comparing it to American V8 and most are smaller then this spec.

The only problem I see is that the outlets to the radiator are on the wrong side. I might have to make some plumbing to get it oriented for the 2UZ.

I have seen all metal Radiators on Ebay for the 4runner. I might get one and re-solder the outlets on the correct side of the radiator.

Depending on how much space i have, mount either a puller or 2 pusher electric fans.
 
I'm not putting a water pump in anything. My V8 or pop's.

I have a mind set that I don't want to change something out unless it needs to.

I just put a water pump in a buddies Solara and I realized that all Toyota's harmonic balancers are a pain in the arse to remove.




Ah, I totally get it. You saw a picture of the Duralast box in a sequioa. That box was used to hold nuts and bolts. That pump went into the above solara. He bought it, what can I do?

I guess that is why I do make some bad assumptions. The box looked like a pump for for a 4.7 from far away.

Autozone has merit in maybe starters and possibly alternators. Waterpumps, maybe on chain driven autos where they can be replaced rather easily when they fail within a year.
 
Trying to clean up. Have a couple of things from the Sequoia to try to sell. Trying to pad my Paypal account to by some electric fans and what not.

I have an Auto dimming mirror. Glues onto wind shield so it should any car. The 4runner mounts to the roof, but once removed, will never new it was there. This mirror has no compass or temp. Just auto dimming and only 2 wires to hook up.

I am thinking $50 shipped

I got the second Sequoia done. I drove it around today. Man, does that thing move. Very easy to spin the tires.

I can't imagine what the 2UZ will do in the lighter 4runner. Now I am itching to get the conversion done.
 
Is that the one for your pops? How can ya post with no pics?

I had a chance on taking a 2001 Sequoia back in 06 instead of the 4runner but the owner wanted $20,000 for it, which was way too much for me. The Sequoia was a great vehicle, but I think Toy priced themselves right out of the market with the new one, especially in this economy.

+1 on the Zerex Asian antifreeze.

Funny story, When I as looking for an SUV last year. My choices were only Toyota's . I looked at 4Runners (3rd gen or newer), Sequoias. Land Cruisers (double lockers preferable) and Lexus LX's.

Everything was very expensive. I could find a Sequoia for less then $14k. I did find one for $8k but it was 2wd. I couldn't find a land cruiser that wasn't full of rot or just ragged out on the inside. Plus, there just wasn't that many on the market.

All the Lexus owners think their stuff is creme of the crop. They are still Toyotas but their prices were re****ed.

I looked at 20 or so 4runners. Some were priced high, some were priced low but I found mine for $6k. Perfect body, perfect interior,new brakes, new Michelins, every service record for the first day. The file was an inch thick.


Ultimately, I am glad I went with my 4runner. I could not imagine taking a big ass Sequoia through OHV trails and what not. Those sequoias are huge.
