V8 conversion

A disappointing evening. Got the Sequoia Dash wired in but came up with a dilima.

The 4runner has all the doors, headlights, dome lights, ignition light rear doors, back doors going to the Gauge cluster while the Sequoia has no provisions for it.

With the Sequoia cluster, I loose my interior delay lights, the delay on the ignition key light, the auto off feature on my headlights.

It blows. Need to figure out haw to get the above working.

I Also lose my RR DIFF Lock light. I did wire it to the posi-traction skid mark light.

That does blow indeed. I won't trade you your dilemma for mine, even though I just shelled out $125 for new LF wheel bearing parts.

Wiring makes me bat s#*t crazy sometimes.

The cluster does look good in the bezel BTW.
 
Bought a 14" fan from Advance. Glad I bought it local because it didn't fit. Returned it and bought Two 12" fans and staggered them onto the radiator.

Wired them in and all three of them really blow some air. Need to really stagger them so they come on at different temperatures but that would be a another a project for way further day.

Yep, Toyota red. Made a little bit of a mess pouring my drain pan back into the radiator.

I am grateful knock on wood, that i have not cut myself with this project. Now, I changed a TB on a V6 Diamante and that tore me up. I bled all over the POS like a stuck pig.
 
Last bit of wiring has been problematic on my dash

The 4runner is very very basic. All the idiot lights are powered and a switch activates it. IE Parking brake light is powered and the switch at the handle grounds it. Same goes for the oil light, the abs, srs, etc.

The Sequoia has everything grounded and when the ground is interrupted, the the circuit is lit up. I think they do this to give the warning lights some blink to it.

Any way, I had to reverse relay my brake, abs, srs and cruise control lights.

Last bit of problem in my wiring fiscal and I do need help with it. Anybody have a FSM or access to it.

The coolant temperature gauge is giving me a fit. On a normal car, the gauge is powered and receives a ground resistance . Kind of a straight shot from the gauge to the engine.

The Sequoia is messed up. The ECM receives the temperature of the engine and uses it for its processing and computing. It then sends an Engine temperature signal to the AC system. The AC System then relays the temperature signal to the the instrument panel.

My problem is to connect the Temperature gauge directly to the ECM and bypass the A/C ECM all together.

Help...
 
Stuff that i need to do still

Install, hook up and wire the EVAP system

Wire in the combination meter

shorten and install the drive shaft

Tape everything up

Buy and install an electric fan

Fabricate the Low side air-conditioning hose

Relocated Fuel filter

Re-install interior components.

Gauge is done with the exception of the temperature gauge

Fans are done and running great, but not sure about the temperature as my gauge currently doesn't work.

Tomorrow, I will shorten and balance the drive shaft.

Should be driving it soon.

Is there a way to yank the parts needed from the 4runner cluster and just wire them in, or is it a circuit board type thing?

I know this is late to the game and you've already solved most your issues I read (and WOW! what an awesome thread, btw!). I remember I once switched out gauge clusters in my old '90 Mazda Protege. The difference being my gauge cluster came with a light on it that lit up when I locked the center differential (putting the car into a true 4x4 mode) but didn't have a tach meter. The new gauge cluster had the tachmeter but no light for the center differential (or 4WD for that matter). I ended up rewiring certain lights to what I needed and then changing the icon in the dash to what I wanted it to show. In other words, a bit of cutting, templates and painting, and then gluing back together. All in all, it worked out in the end, and I got a tachmeter that looked stock for my car!

Good idea. But the Gauge is about twice as big as the Sequoia so it won't fit.

The only thing to really do is Get a FSM and see how the Gauge really interacts with the A/C ecu.

Nevertheless, i will shorten the drive shaft today.

So riddle me this: why the heck would the Toyo engineers design such stupidity? Where is the merit for designing such? So if your gauge temp sensor buys the farm, does the AC systems follow suit, or is there a fail safe for such occurring? And no, I cannot help ya here.

I am not sure why, but maybe so it can turn off the AC in the advent the engine gets too hot.

It sure wasn't to save wire. There are 3 wires that go from the cluster to the AC computer.

Another side note. The wires in the 4runner is a gauge thicker then in the Sequoia. So, there is Toyota saving a penny.
 
That is cost accounting at its finest: trying to save money in one area, but in the broad scope of things, that rarely is the case. If engineers and cost accountants worked side by side (like mixing oil and water), some degree of functional fiscal utility could possibly be achieved.

It sounds like a real PITA.
