I've passed the 60K miles point by quite a bit. Wondering if I should really have the dealer do this. Sounds pricey and hard to verify.

The V8 and V6 use shim type adjusters with no interval specified for adjustment. I don't recall anyone adjusting the valves on a current generation T4R.
I have done this type of adjustment several times on motorcycles and a few cars over the years. It's very labor intensive and in most cases not necessary. Unless you're having roughness or noise I wouldn't bother. NOTE: If you hear valve tickking be sure to rule out fuel injectors, purge valve or the short skirt pistons slapping around when they're cold.

Agreed. It's just that it shows up in the 60K recommended maintenance item list.
I thought modern engines all had some hydraulic device to take up the slack in the valve train. Maybe they only have limited correction capability on their own.

A lot of engines still use mechanical valve actuators, many use the hydraulic lifters. Toyota uses a shim type mechanical valve actuator. The old screw types needed far more frequent adjustment and were far from maint free. Shim type adjusters on air cooled engines typically need attention too. Shims on liquid cooled modern engines are usually fine well past 120K and even past 150K if regular oil chnages are done.
