V8 Owners? Oil change question

For those of you that change your own oil, how closely do you inspect the oil for particulates and what not?

I keep finding what looks to be tiny carbon paper pieces? I don't know, it's small black and paper like? Could it be paper from the filter?

FWIW< using Mobil 1 5w30 with Toyota filters.

if you're worried, i would recommend a blackstone labs oil analysis to see for sure. I do it every 50k. Its $20 and real easy.

Yeah, I've thought about that.

However, this time to source the location, I drained the main pan first then poured the drained contents into the waste container to inspect the oil drain pan, where I found little to nothing. Cleaned it, and drained the oil pump/filter which is where the most was found.

sounds like paper from the filter, which filter did you use?

Sorry saw you said toyota filters.

thats odd. Toyota filters are typically awesome. Try a WIX or similar next change and see if you see anything.

I change my own oil on my ‘05 V8 with 190k and the oil is usually pretty light with no particles in it. I also get back about 6 & 1/4 quarts when draining. I use Toyota 5w30 oil and Toyota filters as well

So when I bought it I noticed it had a very slight amount of build up looking down in the oil filler tube. I have records for almost every oil change from new. Could it be the mobil 1 still cleaning out old carbon build up?

I run Pennzoil Ultra Platinum with Toyota filters and have never seen any sort of particulate in the oil. Granted I have only done 3 oils changes since I have purchased the car.

How many miles are you going between oil changes and how many months? Also, were the filters sitting for a long time? I know particularly here in AZ if anything is exposed to the heat too long it doesn't hold up. Maybe the filter was dried out before you installed it?

If you want to eliminate the filter as a potential cause, use a Fram Ultra. It is synthetic media filter (no paper). I doubt it is the filter for what it's worth but this will confirm.

5000 oci, about 4 months. This filter was bought and installed within a week or so. I cut open the filter to see what else was inside but didnt find much. I did see the paper had a fair amount of fuzz on it.

To me it sounds like M1 is cleaning carbon buildup. If it is super thin and crumbles easily when touched, I'd say its carbon. Keep up the same OCIs and eventually it should stop, ie: M1 has cleaned all it will clean.

If you really want to see what is going on, remove the small pan. The one that has the drain plug. I would want to make sure the pick up screen is still clear. You can also see if there is any build up.
