V8 Throttle body buildup? Any ideas?

I can't figure out where it's coming from? Has anyone seen this before?

Did some more digging around and found this. I just don't understand how it's making its way up the intake manifold?

That sealant doesn't look like FIPG does it?

Based on my experience, it looks like you have a coolant leak and should probably replace your water pump and timing belt if you haven't done so. How many miles are you at?

As for the gunk near the throttle body, looks like oil to me, but I'm sure someone else will have a better idea.

That engine looks filthy man...i offroad the crap outta mine and its never looked that beat. Some Simple Green will help out

Haha, yes, it's on my todo list. Previous owner wasn't the best...

Thanks for the reply. The water pump and timing belt service was done roughly 20,000 miles ago. I'm thinking it may have not been done by Toyota, or the tech didn't seal it up properly. I've decided to simply reseal the coolant manifold.

OK, right on. The coolant that I saw in the picture was probably just leftover from when the service was done.

I'm pretty sure it was leaking. I pulled it off tonight and will be using some high temp RTV to make a new gasket.

I wonder if all the build up could be from the coolant evaporating, then collecting on the intake manifold and collecting dirt.

Guess Ill find out after I reinstall and clean up my filthy engine bay.

I would advise against RTV and instead spend the $4 for a sheet of gasket material and cut your own.

Or just buy the actual Toyota O-ring ! Paper Gaskets and RTV are so ancient "American" technology

I believe the service manual calls for Toyota FIPG, which is a liquid gasket maker. Can anyone confirm?

I can't confirm about the gasket, but I hold the opinion that if something is dirty, the best way to find out how it got dirty is to clean it and then see where the buildup starts happening again.

That being said, I'm better at this in theory than I am in practice.

Well, yeah, that's kinda the obvious answer.

My comment was more about the immediate option of repairing the leak in the event the seal wasn't available.....figured OP might be in a situation of needing his vehicle since I saw that RTV was being used.

Toyota calls for FIPG in this location, a bead filling the groove as I recall from doing my timing belt. I use permatex high temp red RTV following the instruction on the tube. That's definitely a coolant leak seeing the pink crusties, at least it's the right coolant. Fluids can "leak up" for many reasons, happens all the time.

High Temp RTV applied and reinstalled. Gonna let it cure for a couple days. It's only about 35f degrees in my garage, so hopefully it cures. I heated up the coolant manifold before applying the RTV.

The rig is up on stands right now anyways. Won't be drivable for another week or so.

I'll confirm on the FIPG, it's black and wonderful. only times I see a UZ engine leak there is AM water pumps with the paper gasket,Aisin pump has a steel and rubber gasket.
