V8 Timing Belt Question

Of course that is for the pre-05 models. Also, 90,000 miles is the recommended change for the timing belt. I would assume the new vvt-i model would also be a interference engine, but you never know.

call me a newb, but please explain to me what interference you guys are talking about.

In a nutshell:

An interference engine is a term used to describe an engine in which the valves (in the heads) will make contact with the piston if the timing belt should break.

A non-interference engine will not have such contact. If you break a belt, the engine will stop, but no damage will be done.

then please don't mind answering one more question for me: is the v6 engine in the runner a interference engine also???

I really don't know. You cannot use the Gates Replacement Guide as it is for timing belts only and the V6 has a timing chain. That kind of knowledge is something Toyota won't print. Of course the timing chain should hold up for quite a while and probably never have to be replace during the life of the engine.

If I had to take a educated guest, I would think the engine with variable valve timing would be a interference engine. The valves open up more at high RPM and if the chain breaks, the valves may contact the pistons, of course that is just a guess.

The V6 is a chain and as such does not appear in the Gates guide.

The VVT may or may not be interference. I have a VVT Miata that is non-interference. Does anyone know if the V6 is interference or not?
