V8 Timing Belt

Greetings...is there a way to visually tell when I need to replace my timing belt. After searching previous posts, there's no "rule of thumb". I have a 04 Sport with 51K on it.

I found out the hard way.....

Waiting for visual signs and pushing it to the last mile just aint worth it.

Go by the service manual and just do it.

The rule of thumb from Toyota is replace every 90k miles.

The labor to inspect it is the same as changing it.

I'll be at 90k next spring. I plan on a complete make-over under the hood. All belts, and any suspect hoses. It is a small price to pay for peace of mind to take care of these items.

I wonder if there is a similar hose in the 4th gen 4Runner, to the 2" hone in the Land Cruiser which fails in the vehicles mid-life. Probably too early to tell.

If some of you would get driving and get ahead of me in mileage, your 4Runners could be the test vehicle for the rest of us. I don't like being the first.

I had mine changed a couple of months ago, along with all of the hoses, idlers (except for the serpentine), seals, and thermostat. Toyota said that the idlers and seals looked great, but I didn't want to waste the labor if they fail in another 50 K miles.

'03 V8 SR5 4x4 106K miles.

I'm doing the autoRX thing now, and would like to do the seafoam if I can figure it out. Throw in some brake work, and the tail light mod and I'll be set.

I average 36k miles a year but you are going to be pretty hard to catch with your headstart and the rate at which you seem to be putting miles on as well.:dancin:
