V8 vs. V6-what are your thoughts.

no one knows how to search? jeez

ummm yeah, so I was going to order a custom license plate frame. I was thinking a metal one with custom letters on it (black background with white lettering). Its really quite fun to try online (link below)

I was thinking:

bottom: "nothing"

this really clears up the v6/v8 debate for me.

I had an 08 v6 and along with it a constant "drone" i'll call it went 35-40 mph in D. When in 4 it didn't happen. I had it looked at and it was considered normal by multiple dealerships. I drove other v6's around the same model year and indeed they all did it. So accepted it as being normal. But then I read how the v8 was better "mated" to the transmission so I tried one. Not only was there absolutely no drone but I simply loved the way it drove, the power, and how quiet it was. For a $2500 upgrade, I sold the v6, picked up the v8, and could not possibly be happier. Amazing truck that will be in my family for many many years.

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to be in overdrive in any vehicle at those speeds. It's hard on the transmission. I stay in 4th until I'm over 45 mph.

V6, V8 hhmmm.... Who cares!! They are both powerful, reliable engines. If fuel is a concern then get a "suc" (sport utility car) instead, it won't be long before they don't make any true suv's anymore anyway so you'd just be ahead of the curve.

Personally I would find the cleanest, best deal I could and get that one. Either engine is going to be fine if it was cared for. If it wasn't then either engine could end up being an issue.

These posts are a dime a dozen....but I'll play. After all, it is a forum.

I've owned both engines in 4Runners. Not in cars...but in 4Runners. So, I've wheeled both, towed with both, and driven both.

There's a reason I own a V8. Both are great engines...but the V8 is the victor here. For some reason, I see a lot of the V6 owners get all butt hurt over this topic...not sure why...but whatever.

As far as the all time 4wd....it's not a big deal. My V6 barely got better gas mileage over the V8.

So...that's my .02.

Actually, that's my opinion. Just cause you don't like it, doesn't make me flat out wrong. What fact based info do you have to support your statement of me being flat out wrong?

Numbers are fact enough for me. There have been a large handful of head gasket issues on the V6 engines. That's a fact. I can't recall a single V8 engine failure at all on this forum that wasn't caused by a person (i.e. botched timing belt job, hydrolocked, etc.) I'm not saying I don't like your opinion, I can respect any opinion. But this opinion contradicts the facts that have been reported on here.

i wouldn't really call it butthurt, there tends to be a lot of v8 arrogance on here, and while it doesnt bother me, i understand why people get worked up after hearing "theres no replacement for displacement" for the 300th time

i wouldn't call a head gasket issue an engine failure

Pretty sure the dude in the "what did you do to your 4r today" that swapped his engine in yesterday with a used one had the engine "let go" while wheeling. May have been a TB and I missed it, which would sure make me feel better. :)

So far 285k+ miles and only an ac relay and wheel bearing went bad so far. I love my 1GR-FE, brought me to heck and back so far!!!

I specifically sought out the V8 because I want to tow a 21 ft travel trailer. Most V8 equipped T4Rs have the tow package already rated to 7000 lb, so no more work, other than maintenance, would need to be done to the vehicle. V6 versions, I believe, are rated to 5000lbs, good enough for most towing jobs.

I was really looking for a Tundra with a 4.7 or 5.7L. Didn't want to buy new. But used 4WD Tundras, especially with a V8, are truly scarce, at least in my locale. So the T4R with a V8 was the alternative.

Smooth, gutsy engine. Easy on the stupid pedal gets about 19 - 19.5 on the hwy no load. (But it's so-o hard to keep my foot out of it.) That'll probably drop to about 11 pulling a 2 1/2 ton trailer.

Sure wish Toyota still put the V8s in the T4Rs. But it really only filled a pretty narrow requirement gap just above the V6 versions.

C'mon guys! :bash: Why do these threads have to turn into the usual v6 vs v8. If someone, especially a newbie, is asking a question about engine size, try to give them a decent answer without bashing the others. We are here to have a good time!

BTW, I purchased a Tundra to do the heavy work of pulling our travel trailer. It had nothing to do with engine size. It had to do with GAWR and controllability.

In my case I was set on finding one with the V6 and loved the way they drove, but couldn't find the one to pull the trigger on. Then I came across one with a V8 that was to clean to not at least take a closer look at. Once I drove it that what is it, I bought it. The feel of the V8 was much more superior, it just was more perky and shifted alot cleaner. The mileage is not much more off and besides, I wasn't buying a 4runner to conserve fuel so didn't care if it consumed a tad more then the V6. Way worth the few extra dollars a week....

We bought my wife a 05 Limited v6 about 2-3 months ago. Very quiet, very very smooth. Like, I can't even tell its running other than the fact that we're moving. Plenty of power... She drives a lot more miles, mostly traffic, so we wanted to save gas where we could. She's plenty happy.

A month ago I picked up a 07 SR5 4WD V8, I prefer the power, already added a Flowmaster 50 SUV and resonator delete. I wanted the V8 rumble, power, and I don't put 1/4 the miles on my vehicles that my wife does.

The differences aren't huge but there is definitely a difference. When I mash the long pedal in mine, it flat out gets it... My only gripe is that mine is always in 4wd, so I haven't been able to break the tires loose yet. I miss getting a little sideways and smokey burnouts.

Thats my take as someone who has both engines in the family.

Correct. But for every blown headgasket, IM willing to bet there is a v8 with timing belt/water pump issue. They both have their strong suits. I prefer the six. Unless you are towing alot, the six is plenty. Bottom line, if you maintain it at normal service intervals, neither should fail.
