Vacationing this summer?

I came across a well done site just now which contains a log and photographs of one mans journey to Alaska with his Jeep and his tent trailer.

Reminded me how lucky I am to live up here, and how I wish more people could experience it.

If you're looking at planning a holiday for the family this summer, try something other than Europe or Hawaii for a change, and take a road trip to Alaska. You'll be glad you did :

Neat site, I would love to go to Alaska, but it would take forever. Great pictures.

I am planning a trip out West this Summer, but not quite that far North. I tought of getting a camper trailer, but I think I will stay with just tents. So, I plan on going to the Rockies, does that count?

I noticed the guy who went to Alaska, left Montana on the last day and went 886 miles to New York and he was towing a trailer. Now that is a lot of miles. Of course he drove 10,987 miles for the whole trip.

I did a trip to Newfoundland from GA and it was 5,800 miles. A lot of distance, but not as much as Alaska.

Yes, I did. I was able to put a canvas car top carrier inside the canoe full of sleeping pads and stuff. I have 2 canoes, the one pictured is Kevlar and wieghts under 40 pounds. My other 17' canoe is a Gruman aluminium canoe and wieghs 80 pounds.

It wasn't that bad taking the kevlar canoe, once in a while heavy cross winds would shake the SUV, other than that it was fine. I figured I had less than 70 pounds up on top when fully packed. It worked so good, I am tempted to take the canoe out West.

When I was on the trip, I took the canoe out at the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia. When I got back from an island 4 miles away, the tide had gone out and I had to walk the mud flats for about a mile. My son, 10 years old at the time, sank into the mud up to his knees. He sat in the canoe while I dragged it over the flats to shore.

The Bay of Fundy has over 25' tides and the tide eventally uncovered about 3 miles of mud flats or almost to the island I went to earlier that day.

It might be kind of nice visting the ponds and lakes out West. Of course they won't have mud flats.

I'm surprised that the wind resistance wasn't worse than that.
