Value of 4Runner that needs a transmission

Hi all, i am not sure if this is the right place to post this, so please move if needed.

My 2006 SE 4WD needs a new tranny. I'm not sure I want to invest the $2500+ it needs as it's got 180k on it. I was thinking about getting a bigger car in the next few years, but am wondering if this may be the time to consider it.

Does anyone have any idea what a truck like this would be worth? Or if there is an accepted way to calculate it? Any insight would be provided.

Very bittersweet, as I've loved my 4Runner and really didnt want to give it up so soon.

Basically take the value of a the condition car and subtract the transmission job from the total price.

Price of these rigs vary from state to state and depends on the condition. Most people sell the v6 and the v8 at the same price.

What happened to the transmission that makes you think it's toast? But yeah, it'd be book price minus $2500 and that's your number. Also 180k isn't a ton of miles for these trucks so, unless you have other issues engine-wise, might be worth the investment.

Diagnostic

Did you get it diagnosed by a transmission shop or dealer? Aisin transmission can go 400k even with minimal service. My tranny on my 3rd Gen. is at 350k right now and my 4th Gen. (V8) is at 270k.

Do some research and use the knowledge to your benefit...buy it for $4k less and fill it up with new fluid and see if it works...sometimes you can benefit from those who choose to be lazy...if it IS a bad tranny for sure, you're "covered..."

One of the issues that was fixed on later 05s and beyond was temperature control for the transmission. if it is under normal operating conditions, agreed can go longer than other components. If it was towing or over use of 4wd, could certainly damage the fluid/ components if it was overheated.

Again, tough to know. You could pay to have a transmission specialist look at it, but again i think you should look at what % of the purchase price is that service and then again replacing or repair transmission in the the vehicle

can you provide some more details on why you think the trans is bad? could be other things like the torque converter thats bad & the trans itself is ok. 180k miles is rather low for these 4runners & the trans.

$2500+ sounds kinda high for a trans rebuild or replace. might want to check with junkyards for a used but warranted trans or some other smaller but reputable trans shops for the labor, should be about half that price depending what is done. a dealership is the worst place to go for any maint once the warranty is expired.

V8 or V6, the clue to the "failure" may be how much weight and for how many miles you have towed stuff.
On the other hand, lots of options, sell to someone that has a low mileage rusted frame. Find a salvage trans and swap it or sell it to guy like me that can fix it.
I had a friend sell his car to his favorite mechanic. The mechanic then fixed it and sold it. Everyone was happy.
Another friend gave his totaled Volvo to a Volvo mechanic. The shop then sold parts to his customers and they split the profit. My friend doubled his money if would have sold the car before it was totaled.
I am not too trusting of transmission repair guys any longer. A trusted shop in the area want more money to rebuild a common C-4 automatic from a ’65 Mustang for the same price I can buy a race ready one from Jeggs!
Just be upfront with everyone when selling.

If it is a v8 and not rusted, just the engine and body panels would be worth around 3k. If its a v6...might be a tough sell to anyone who wants a 4th gen. buying and shipping any salvage trans + labor would be more than the bluebook value of the entire truck.
