I'm looking to sell my 99 4Runner LTD and need an opinion on it's value. It has 211K, runs very well and the body is in great shape considering it's been in New England all of it's lifke. LOF done religiously, new exhaust, tires, brakes within the pas 12-18 months. One problem, just got a 420 cat code. My mechanic can re-set it to buy 2 more years of time, the original owner is interested in it and I want to sell it at a fair price. NADA has it at $3600 in non-running condition, my mechanic thinks $2500 is a fair price. Thoughts?

Need more info to give you a better idea. Any rust, accidents, overall condition? Have the TB & WP been done? Is it stock?

Your mechanic told you that resetting the P0420 code would buy you 2 years? Did he explain that? I wish any and all codes could simply be reset and not come back for 2 years, but it just doesn't work like that. If/when your rear O2 sensor completes a drive cycle and senses that the CAT is not performing properly, it's going to throw the code again, period. It's not set on any sort of timer. When you say new exhaust, does that include new CAT(s) as well? If not, you may have a bad one. Or, could just be the sensor. I got a 420 the day I bought my runner and I replaced the sensor and the code has not come back for what has now been several months. Hell, you can reset the code yourself, just disconnect the battery, wait a bit, and connect it back up. But there is no way to predict if/when that code will come back.
Saying it's in good condition considering it has been in New England all its life isn't saying much. Either it has significant rust or it doesn't, no matter where it has been, but especially if it has been in the Northeast.
If it's in good shape, has been well maintained, and runs well, it should be worth way more than $2500, or at least it would be around here. But if you are willing to take that for it, and it runs, you probably won't have much problem getting rid of it, especially if it's 4x4 (you didn't say).
All that said, I'd suggest finding a new mechanic.

I recently bought a 99 limited. Its got 4 Wheel drive, 223,000 miles, excellent condition in and out, dealer maintained. I paid $5,000. (Also sold a 99 limited 4X4 last moth, terrible condition it was in an accident, a little banged up and not the best, sold it for $4500).

Around here, even w/ the cat issue you could fetch 4500+ for a 2wd and tack on another 1200 or so for a 4x4. Easy.

North of the border these things haul crazy $$ I bought mine at 6700 - 4x4 limited with maintenance done dec tires and uhmm let me do the math.. 170 miles. No real rust. AND that was a steal :banana: so i think given your region and condition upwards of 4k for a 2wd and 5k for a 4x4 would be fair...

OP, if the book says $3600 in non-running condition, why would $2500 be the number? You seem to not only describe it as running, but as well maintained and in good shape (considering, whatever that means).
thanks for the feedback, to clarify on the code, mechanic to re-set, then I need to drive it for a week before bringing it to the state emissions test. it may fail, it may not, if it passes then I don't need to test again for 2 years. as far as value, it's a limited, 4x4,leather powered seats, sunroof, tires -2 yrs old, new exhaust (minus cat of course) -1 yr, rear shocks -6 months, brakes - 1yr, no surface rust, minor scratches, no accidents. Neighbor's looking to buy it for his daughter, I want to sell for a fair price.

A week may not do it. If you have access to a scan tool, you can check it yourself to make sure none of the sensors are "INC" as far as emissions. If they are not showing INC and you didn't get the code back, you'd be good to go. But there's a good chance, if you didn't do anything but clear the code, it will come back and/or they won't pass you on emissions because the sensors haven't completed a drive cycle. Understand you wanting to cut neighbor a deal and what you decide to sell for is your own business. But, I'll say again, if it runs good and is in good shape, it should fetch a couple more thousand dollars at least than what your so-called mechanic told you.

Hard to say but changing the sensor is cheaper and easier than changing the CAT. Can get one for $60 and change online and install it yourself.

When I was looking into purchasing my t4r I had a salesman at my work look up the black book value of the vehicle. going back as far as they can for a 99, wholesale value was $1400, which might be why your mechanic gave you the low number. But it seems these vehicles fetch a good dollar when sold privately. I paid $3300 for my 97 sr5 4x4 with 300 000km needing only a windshield. But see most going for 4-7k depending on condition. like said above, check out what other people are asking and availability in your area on auto trader and kijiji.
