Value penalty of salvage title for high mileage 3rd gen?

Hi all,
Wondering if you think a rebuilt salvage title (collision, not flood) would impact the value of a 3rd gen over 250k miles. If so, what percent?

Seems like it should, but also at that age maybe it doesn't matter as much.

Salvage always matters. Harder to resell, insurance Probably wont let you get full coverage only liability. Also get all the info on what was damaged in the accident.

I mean there is a point when you hit rock bottom prices but generally salvage is alot cheaper since you taking on the liability of it.

a recon title 250,000 mile 3rd gen here in alaska is worth 2100 if its in decent condition

Depends on the person. I live in a highly populated area where there are plenty of vehicles available on C-list, so I flat out refuse to buy one.

If I were in the rural area where I grew up, and the vehicle was say a theft recovery with pix to show damage (not collision), and it had been all maintained with receipts and garaged, and had the type of stuff I would kit out on the vehicle I would subtract 15%.

I would steer clear of any collision that entailed more than a bumper or fender replacement.

I am pickier than most. But for collision I believe a salvage title means it was "totaled" for the value the vehicle had. No way Jose. Theft could mean it was recovered after the pay out but I am unclear on that.

I tend to steer clear of salvage title… many never seem like a good deal in the end. I think many private party sellers really value their cars too high but I would consider it if I was in the need for a dedicated off-road only build or a parts car.

One thing I learned was that my primary insurance provider wouldn’t even insure a salvage title.

It depends. A $700 beater with those miles? I wouldn’t really care, especially since an old high mileage vehicle in poor shape can be totaled for very minor damage. However if it is a more expensive vehicle regardless of the miles I wouldn’t really be interested in a salvage title.

Some people around here who can’t afford newer diesel trucks but want a brodozer to park in front of their double wide go to a local guy who rebuilds totaled vehicles and sells them at a hefty discount, they almost always have problems, sometimes major problems, and the ones that had a front end collision usually can’t be aligned very well.

A friend of mine had his lx450 totaled from a collision that basically just broke the headlight and grill because it had close to 400k miles on it, he bought it back from the insurance company and still drives it

So basically what I’m saying is if it doesn’t book very high to begin with a salvage title isn’t too big of a deal, since minor damage can total them, but something that would normally be much more expensive or newer is what I would watch out for

I would say a salvage title is a 25% discount to a non salvage title, depending on the damage of course.

At the end of the day, these trucks are very old and not worth much and doesn't take very much to total one out so the damage is likely be very minor. One dented fender and they are probably totaled.

Assuming they drive OK, and any repairs appear well done, there probably isn't going to be very much to worry about from a salvage title versus a non-salvage title. Overall condition, and how they drive, is a much bigger factor than title. Most of the ones I see for sale are either pretty trashed, and I wouldn't buy them regardless of clean title since they have clearly been abused, or they are sort of in good condition, and the sellers wants a huge premium, which is kind of stupid to pay given their age.

Also, check when the salvage title was issued, if you’re looking at a 99 and it was salvaged in 01 the damage was likely pretty severe, if it was salvaged in 2017 with 230k miles it likely wasn’t as bad since nobody is going to rebuild a 230k mile truck that was rolled or hit really hard
